Voluminous Volume

We will measure, compare and contrast physical properties of matter including size, mass, VOLUME, state (solid, liquid, gas), temperature, magnetism, and the ability to sink and float. (TEK 4.5A)

This lesson came to me while I was in the shower. Reaching for my shampoo bottle I saw the word VOLUME in large print on the front. I then thought about my how I normally just do a water displacement lab for volume and the kids have fun but what if I could innovate the way I present and introduced to them volume. I braided my hair into about 20 little braids and went to sleep. When I woke up, I un-braided my hair and teased it to get as much volume as I could. Walking into school the kids chuckled and were very confused. They already thought I was crazy but I think this act just confirmed they were right. They definitely remember that volume is the amount of space an object takes up!
