After reading Teach Like a Pirate, I was inspired. One of my favorite chapters in the book was to take your least favorite lesson and innovate it to make it your favorite lesson. Every year when we talk about the formation of coal I cringe. It is my least favorite lesson. YAWN. YAWN. YAWN. The day before the lesson I felt negativity sinking in. I tried to keep an innovator's mindset and went back to the drawing board. I came up with "Peat the Plant." I made a late night trip Walmart and spent two hours hot gluing fake moss to a shirt and hat. The kids loved it! Where the costume definitely brought a little extra excitement to learning about coal forming-- especially when they heard all about my tragic death.
