You start hearing footsteps coming from behind the door.  They sound rushed, as if to signify an incoming message of particular importance.  And they're uneven, one step is faster than the other, probably because one of these feet has been stomped out by the regent a few too many times to be safe.  They get louder as the owner approaches until-
