That's right, you need to go up those stairs so that you can get to the gate so that you can go free your dad, and also continue playing this game.  You also collect all the rest of the grist.  That ogre dropped some COAL GRIST that could be used in some alchemy formulas.  As you walk, you notice a feeling of purpose wash over you.  It's a good one.
