President Trump Makes it Official: U.S. will Withdraw from the Paris Accord

Before the final announcement, Trump had already strongly criticized the Paris Accord, saying that the global deal would decrease the number of jobs and impose oppressive regulations on the economy of the country due to donating 100 billion to undeveloped countries. As recently as last month, Trump called the climate agreement “a total disaster”, as it “hurts the competitiveness” of the U.S.

The Paris Agreement legally entered into force exactly three years ago: November 4, 2016. The United Nations' rules say that no country could leave the Accord for three years, then there would be a one-year waiting period for the withdrawal to take effect. President Trump had wasted no time with his decision to quit.

The Agreement was to cut back carbon emissions with the goal of keeping the global temperature increase below 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Public health advocates and environmentalists were obviously appalled by his actions, even though it did not come as a surprise. “Abandoning the Paris agreement is cruel to future generations, leaving the world less safe and productive,” said Andrew Steer, president of the World Resources Institute.
