What is S.W.A.T.?

S.W.A.T. or Students Working to Assist with Technology, is currently a program at the Middle School level that empowers students to take on leadership roles in their classes by learning and teaching technology. Members will support teachers and classmates by troubleshooting basic technology issues, promoting appropriate use of technology, interacting with others in a polite manner, training future members and setting goals for educational projects.

What will S.W.A.T. members learn?

Members are trained by their classroom Teachers, Instructional Technology Resource Teacher (ITRT), and Technician. S.W.A.T. members will learn about how to effectively use and answer common questions on Chromebooks, Google Apps and Smart Boards. In addition and perhaps more importantly,

SWAT members will learn skills such as:

  • Problem solving
  • Customer service
  • Leadership
  • Data analysis
  • Goal setting

What Requirements will I have as a S.W.A.T. member?

Students who are selected as Students Working to Assist with Technology members will have a higher level of expectations for school behavior and attendance. Teachers and students will be relying on your technology assistance and they need to know that they can count on their good character. You must be certain that you can agree to the following expectations BEFORE requesting this position.

1. You must maintain passing grades, C or better. Grades will be checked twice during each advisory. If you earn an F as your advisory grade in a class or two or more D's you will be dismissed from the S.W.A.T.. If you earn a D in one class, consider yourself on probation until the end of the grading period. If the grades are not brought up you will be dismissed from the S.W.A.T to allow you the extra time you need to work on your studies.

2. You must complete your homework and class work. This does not mean that if you miss an assignment once in awhile you will be removed from S.W.A.T. It means that if completing homework or class work becomes a serious problem then you will no longer be a S.W.A.T. member.

3. You must maintain good behavior and citizenship. If you are sent to the office for a discipline referral, you will be on probation for two weeks. If you are sent to the office for a discipline referral while on probation, you will no longer be a S.W.A.T. member. If you earn in-school or out-of-school suspension as a consequence for the referral you will no longer be a S.W.A.T. member.

4. You must be come to school regularly. If you receive a letter for chronic school absences then you will be on probation until the end of the nine weeks. Continued absences from school may lead to dismissal from the S.W.A.T. team.

How do I become a S.W.A.T. member?

The application window for upcoming 7th and 8th graders will be open April 3rd - April 20th. Additional Information on the program can be obtained from your homeroom teacher or your school's Instructional Technology Resource Teacher. To apply you must complete the following:

  1. Make sure you meet the requirements expected of a S.W.A.T. member.
  2. Complete and submit the student application form by April 20th.

All applications will be reviewed by a committee. Once the review process is completed all applicants will receive a letter informing them on whether they have been selected. Inductees will receive a permission form. A parent or guardian must fill out the permission form and it must be returned by the date stated on the form.

When do S.W.A.T. members get trained/have meetings?

Meetings are generally twice a month during ELT.
