Undeniably Brilliant Gift Ideas for an April Fools Birthday

My name is Serena, and I was born on April Fools Day. Being born on this very special holiday comes with a certain…reputation. The second people hear that I was born on the annual day devoted to pranks, there’s always a pause, a raised eyebrow, and the inevitable “Wait, really?” While I have surprisingly never been pranked (as far as I know), the potential for chaos is always in the air, and it feels like a missed opportunity not to embrace it. If you’re struggling to find the perfect present for someone whose birthday is basically a national excuse for mischief and trickery, here are some perfectly reasonable gift ideas to consider.
One gift that I would love to receive is a jar of pickles, because nothing says celebration quite like cucumbers that have been sitting in mysterious brine for an extended period of time. Once the pickles have been consumed, you’re left with a jar of vaguely suspicious liquid that could serve a multitude of purposes: a science experiment investigating anything from acid-based reactions to osmosis, or it could even serve as emotional support. At this point, it’s not just a gift. It’s a scientific opportunity, conversation starter, and a slightly concerning life choice, all of which feel perfect for April Fools Day.
Another gift that I would gladly accept is a star, because let's be real, is a massive burning ball of gas millions of miles away not the coolest present ever? This gift would keep on giving, because when the star reaches the end of its life, it will leave behind an endless supply of premium space dust and cosmic gas. I’m sure I’ll still be alive to see that. I don’t need a certificate or anything, just go outside on a clear night and pick the brightest, shiniest speck in the sky. Granted, this might be something else like a planet or satellite, but I trust your judgement. A star is the perfect gift because it’s a little impractical, slightly confusing, and impossible to verify, which I think really captures the spirit of April 1st.
Finally, the Needham High School’s 100’s floor. As Lucy states in A Charlie Brown Christmas when asked what she really wants to be gifted, she says with absolute certainty: “real estate.” I completely agree, and what better real estate than NHS's very own basement. There’s nothing quite like walking down the hallway to long-block physics first thing on a Monday with that heavenly scent of stale coffee mixed with the definitely not overflowing bathroom water wafting through the air. If the entire hallway is a little out of your budget, one classroom would suffice. Just make sure that it’s connected to a supply closet so I can access the lab equipment that is definitely older than I am, an array of mysterious boxes and drawers that haven’t been opened in years, and most importantly: a coffee machine.
All in all, an April 1st birthday isn’t a fate destined to be overshadowed by mischief and trickery, it’s the perfect excuse to lean into the chaos and get creative with your gift-giving.
