A School Dance at Neuwirth?

By Daisy Carrasco & Hely Quintero

The breeze is in the air, the warmth of sipping hot chocolate is approaching, Saturday, December 10th is destined to be the event of the semester. Neuwirth will be hosting their first ever Winter Formal, a chance to get together and socialize with your friends on a cold winter night. Winter Formal is the perfect place to take pictures, eat free food, and listen to music with your friends.

If you’re still not convinced, check out the most common excuses students make to not attend, and learn how they just don’t stand up to reason.

“It’s on a Saturday, why waste a day out of our weekend?”

Well, Winter Formal is one of our new events being introduced here at Neuwirth, replacing the Boxer Bash of the semester. Many students complain about how because the school is tiny, we do not get to experience the entire “High School Experience,” but this is one of the small changes the school is making to allow students to have as many good memories and a fun time for all students. Instead of having Homecoming like other schools, Neuwirth is having a Winter Formal. Unlike the prom, which is only for seniors, this dance is for every single student at Neuwirth from any grade level.

“I don’t have the money to go to a dance”

Usually dances at school tend to ask you to pay for your entrance, however the formal will be completely free for all students on campus and will be worth the wait. All you need is an arc enrollment form, field trip slip to receive your ticket. You need to turn in those two forms to your Advisory by Dec 8th to receive your ticket. Instead of having Boxer Bash this semester, Arc is using those funds to pay for this event and use it as a way to reward all students for their hard work ending the semester.

“School events are never fun”

Another reason why some students may not want to attend this event is from a fear of a lack of entertainment. However, ARC is providing us with entertainment including a DJ (which all students are allowed to recommend music ahead of time for the dance), a station to take polaroid pictures with friends, and a Snowflake Making Station.

“It probably is just going to serve school lunch food”

One of the most important factors about why you should attend this event is because of the food. Typically, students believe the same food given out during nutrition and lunch will be given at events like this, but this is not the case. The school will be serving food options from the restaurant, The Habit at the Winter Formal. As well, there will be an option of vegetarian food for all those who don't prefer meat. Other options for food will be snacks/drinks like Hot Cocoa, Mocktails, Nachos and Hot Cheetos with cheese, as well as a snack and drinks station.

“Wait a minute, this actually does sound fun”

Make your experience here at Neuwirth as memorable as you can by attending the Winter Formal.

The World Cup Group Stages: 2022

By Brandon Cortes and Jeffrey Hernandez

This year's World Cup has been a spectacle to watch. From unforeseen upsets, to expected dominance. A lot of firsts came in this World Cup, Canada’s first World Cup goal, Wales’ first time competing in 64 years, and of course, the first time in World Cup history where the host county, Qatar, doesn’t even have a chance to make it out of groups after 2 game making it the 2nd host country ever to make it out of groups.

The World Cup came with some surprising results in the group stage. Although it has been a while since Wales has competed, they were able to tie it up with USMNT with a penalty from Gareth Bale and end their first game in a draw. Earlier that day, England beat Iran 6-2, cementing that they are one of the teams to look out for, with a strong attacking front, England was predicted to top the group and they did. The surprises didn’t stop there as the very first match the next day ended with tournament favorites Argentina losing 1-2 to Saudi Arabia, a team that should have been a simple match for Argentina, ended up being a first game lost in what is Messi’s last chance at winning it all. Later in the day, the second group C match of Mexico v. Poland ended with a draw but only thanks to Mexico’s goalie Ochoa who was able to save a penalty from Lewandowski, undoubtedly one of the best strikers in the world. Another shocking result would be Japan's 2-1 win over Germany. Japan had a slow start and nearing the end of game, Germany was up by 1, however Japan was able to pull through and in the 75th and 83rd minute, they scored, surprising Germany and everyone else by ending the game 2-1 in japan’s favor. In the second round of games, Iran was able to beat Wales 2-0 while the other game in the group, England vs. USA, ended in a draw. Belgium also continued their lackluster performance where in the first game, although they won, Canada dominated them, and in their next game, Belgium lost to Morocco 0-2, things are looking bleak for them and their performance the end of their golden generation might be here. As mentioned before, despite how well Canada is playing they have lost the first two games they played and it makes playing the 3rd one much more difficult.

Out of group A, Netherlands and Senegal made it through to the round of 16 meaning Qatar and Ecuador are eliminated in groups. Despite the absence of Sadio Mane, Chelsea players Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy led Senegal to their victory. Group B was an interesting group consisting of England, USA, Iran, and Wales, from that group England lead on top, with the US winning against Iran they gained the second place spot meaning that they also advanced to the round of 16. The Lebron James of Soccer, Christian “Captain America” Pulisic, a Chelsea super star got the game winning goal against Iran, securing the United States’ advancement. In group C, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Poland, and Mexico played against each other, Argentina’s first game loss meant nothing to them as they came back the next two games and 2-0’d their opponents securing them the top spot of the group. On the final day of the games, a battle for second ensued, as Mexico and Poland were both on each other's back trying to move on to the round of 16. A disappointing end to Mexico’s World Cup run as they failed to reach the round of 16, for the first time since the 1978 World Cup, by not being able to score 3 on Saudi Arabia to win on goal difference, meaning that it is Argentina and Poland that make it out of group C. Although highly rated players like N’golo Kante, Paul Pogba, Karim Benzema, and Mike Maignan were out of the French squad, France still managed to top group D. Surprisingly Australia also made it out of the group stages for the second time in their World Cup history. France and Australia advancing to group stages means Denmark and Tunisia are out of the 2022 World Cup.

Japan shocked the world as they won their first game against Germany and did it again in their last win against Spain, securing the top spot in group E. Although Spain lost their last match they were still able to get second place in the group. A shocking result for Germany as they failed to qualify for the group stages for the second consecutive time. Costa Rica also has been eliminated from the World Cup. In group F, Morocco and Croatia will be advancing to the round of 16. Canada, like Qatar, lost all their group stage matches and were eliminated only after their second match. Despite Belgium being ranked the 2nd best national team by FIFA, they let down their fans and country by not making it out of the group stages. In group G, Brazil lost their last match against Cameroon but that wasn’t enough to knock them out of the competition and will be advancing to the round of 16. Switzerland has also passed to the round of 16 meaning that Cameroon and Serbia have been eliminated. A surprising result after South Korea beat Portugal, securing them second in group H. Portugal’s loss wasn’t enough to be eliminated and still finished first in their group. Portugal and South Korea passing means Uruguay and Ghana have been eliminated from the FIFA 2022 World Cup.
