Classes We Love

Have you ever wondered what a student's favorite classes are? And why? Is it because of the teachers themselves being fun? Or do they only enjoy the class content and not the teacher? We asked students their opinion, and the results are in.
It’s finally the second semester and we all have at least one class that we don’t mind going to (I hope). Maybe it’s the teachers themselves making it fun, or the subject being interesting to you personally. Whatever the reason, there are many classes that each grade level takes and there are many excellent teachers as well.
According to a poll given to the students at Neuwirth, here are the top classes for each grade level:
The freshmen picked STEM (Mr. Stempel) as their favorite class, the reason being that it is a subject that they enjoy. When asked for some examples of what makes this their favorite class, one young scholar responded, “I like learning about how to build a rocket just by using material that most people wouldn’t think of.” Another eager underclassman shared “The subject is what makes that class my favorite because it's pure engineering. Also the teacher is very nice…” STEM makes the students feel excited to go to the class because they are able to partake in different activities compared to other classes.
The sophomore class chose AP World History with Ms. Martinez as their favorite class. The reason for this is that the teacher makes the class more fun and interesting. The responses talked about how they really feel like she is someone they can talk to: “She's not so serious all the time, makes class easy to understand, and she's like a friend to the students.” Another student added, “While classes are filled with a lot of students, Ms. Martinez does her best to not only teach us, but to make the learning experience enjoyable. I <3 Martinez.” For students, it's not necessarily only the subject that excites them, it is Ms. Martinez herself and her compassion that makes them feel safe and interested.
For the juniors it is no surprise to many that this class won for their grade level: Ms. Stobart’s always popular Art elective received the most votes Ms. Stobart’s class is always just fun in general, whether you can draw really well or not, she finds a way to make it enjoyable for all of her students. She also is a wonderful teacher who makes sure that her class is not stressful and the students can just enjoy their time. “I enjoy going into art class because I don't have stressful experiences in this class and I feel I can connect with Ms. Stobart very easily,” a student wrote. Students are able to fully connect with her because she just has this bright personality and she always encourages her students when they are in her class. It is no surprise that so many people enjoy Art.
Lastly, the seniors chose Criminal Justice with Ms. Ford as their favorite class this year. The reason for this is because the class is hardly ever stressful for the students, as this is an elective class the students get to enjoy the class even more without all of the normal stress you get from a typical class. One student wrote, “... the mock trial she did in her class where students have to take on a role in the court and they had to win over the case against one another was fun and educational at the same time.” nother student wrote, “This class allows you to be very engaged in the work and be able to be independent when you want to.” Ms. Ford understands that students can get stressed out by their other classes and so she makes sure that her class is not one that they have to constantly worry about and makes her assignments fun for them to enjoy.
Throughout all of the grade levels, here are the top 3 classes that came out on top. With 19%, Art was considered everyone's favorite class, while the second highest was Criminal Justice with 13% and lastly the third highest class out of all of them is Film with 11%. A pattern people can notice is that all three of these classes are electives, so take what you want from that. The most commonly cited reason why a student picked a class as being their favorite is because the teacher makes the class fun, so whenever a student says “I hate this class!” teachers, maybe it’s time to take it personally.
Also I don’t know who this was since the survey was anonymous, but someone really wanted Ms. Stobart to know that they are her fan. According to the survey they are in 12th grade so Ms. Stobart, please acknowledge them, whoever they are. “The reason why I consider Art class to be my number one favorite subject is because Ms. Stobart is a carefree and sweet individual whose aura brightens my mood to last for the whole day. PS, tell her I said this so she'll know who her fan is.🤣” They are a senior and they seem to really like her class, so hopefully this article reaches Stobart so that she can acknowledge her fan.
