Trends come and go, and most are harmless, but is it possible that you are doing something that will make you recoil when you look back on pictures from today?
Are you the type of person to participate in popular trends? There is always something new trending, whether it be a new fashion style, dance, social media platform, catchphrase, or something makeup related. Remember being weirdly obsessed with mustaches or emojis, making musical.lys with excessive hand movements, dabbing, or asking people on social media if they wanted a tbh, rate, or a shoutout for a shoutout? It’s mortifying to think back on these dark times, I know, we all regret it. As much as we cringe at our past, have you thought about what current trends will be embarrassing to look back on in ten years? We asked several Neuwirth students to predict which current trends will be the most regrettable in the future and this is what they said:
Nowadays many believe that owning expensive shoes and accessories is what makes them fashionable. Despite having a weird design or being overpriced, if it's trending and celebrities are wearing it, many are more eager to purchase it and make it work. But a few seniors here at Neuwirth had something to say about some current fashion trends. Giselle Carvente said, “I think bape backpacks are ugly and they’re a waste of money. There's nothing interesting about it, they just slap the brand on it and people buy it, why?!” Marlyn Ruiz states, “ I don't see the Yeezy foam runners as stylish and they're not my type. They're too expensive, too big, and look like dinosaur feet,” and Yanitza Cruz says, “I think weird looking shoes, like the new red astro boy boots, we’ll look back and think why was that even a thing.”
The most popular app today is TikTok, many of us today can scroll through the app for hours and hours watching grwms, different challenges, new dances, reviews, and much more. As entertaining as it is, some believe that it’ll soon become cringey like past social media platforms. Yescia Maldonado, a current senior, says, “The way we make up those dances is just cringe. We’ll be so embarrassed that we won’t want to show those videos to our kids or families.”
The edgar look, this became popular back in 2021 on tiktok and is still trending today. This is the look where boys are wearing baggy clothes and getting that straight cut fringe across their forehead. While many think this look is cool and attractive, do you think they'll still want to be rocking this look in their 30's? Ashley Calderon, a sophomore here at Neuwirth, says, “The Edgar look is going to be something that people will look back on and think it’s cringey. They look like they have a bowl cut or Dora bangs.”
The always stylish Ms. Ochoa fears for our future selves at a time when we will look back in horror at the revival of cargo pants. “They were popular when I was in junior high, and they don’t look good. They shouldn’t be popular again” she said when asked about fashion crimes she witnesses among Neuwirth students.
We’ve all flipped through the family photo album and laughed at what our parents were wearing. Those candid snapshots and staged family photos are irrefutable evidence of cringe trends committed by the last generation. You’d think, with all the evidence of grievous offenses on record that we’d learn from others' mistakes, but alas, here we are wearing super wide leg jeans, weird cut-out shape shirts, tiny glasses, with a fanny pack slung over our shoulder, thinking that the shame police won’t catch up with us for our cringe crimes someday.
