Season Smackdown:

Summer vs. Winter

Winter Is Cool; Summer Sucks

By: Amy Calderon

Which do you prefer, the winter or the summer? If you said summer, that changes today as I share with you a few of the many reasons why winter is the best and summer is the worst. The weather during the winter is much better than the scorching heat in the summer.

Since we live in Los Angeles, we don’t experience snow or freezing temperatures so the weather during the day is between 50℉ and 70℉ which is nice and cool. During the summer, the humid air makes our skin feel so sticky and hot, and we don’t want to go out in public unless there's some body of water to get in or an airconditioned place. We get sunburned. And don’t get me started on the odors. This is the time where people get so sweaty which causes public places and these school hallways and classrooms to smell.

Winter is the time where we get to wear our comfiest clothes to stay nice and warm and not as many people smell. For those who wear hoodies during the summer, the winter is your best friend because you get to wear your favorite piece of clothing comfortably. We also get to bring out our big soft blankets and pillows, so even sleeping is better in the winter.

This is the season where our moms, tias, and abuelas also start to make some of the best hot foods like caldo, posole, tamales, and so much more which not only warm us up as we eat away, but make our houses warm in the process of their making, it's a win win.

Compare that to summer, when pesky animals like flies and mosquitoes are roaming around to annoy you, stand on your food, and leave you with itchy bites, but during the winter they disappear! Or when our Hispanic families, for some odd reason, decide to make those hot foods on the hottest days of summer, while the food is good, it makes us sweat even more. Life is simply not as enjoyable as it is during the winter.

Some may argue that summer is better because we get two months off of school, but after that break is over, we have to start a new school year. We worry about starting a new grade, getting harder classes, new teachers, and even going to a whole new campus once you graduate high school. On the other hand, after winter break, we come back to school and just have one more semester to get through.

Lastly, during the three week winter break, we celebrate two of the best holidays. Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year as we get to spend time with our loved ones, eat good, give and open gifts, decorate our houses, watch Christmas movies, listen to Mariah Carey, and the list goes on. New Years is another holiday where we get to spend time with our family and friends to welcome the coming year while watching the colorful fireworks at midnight. We just came back from this break, and it was relaxing and full of joy, right? Do you ever feel that joyful, peaceful, and loved during summer? I didn’t think so.

Without a doubt, winter is the best time of the year.

Summer Outshines Winter

Most people associate summer as this scorching hot season, but it also provides many advantages as well, like spending time with loved ones, learning new hobbies, going swimming, visiting a lake with family and going to the beach. Students have longer breaks in the summer than winter which allows them to spend more time with family and friends. You can also go to water theme parks and go on picnics with friends or family. It’s the perfect time to simply spread a blanket on the grass and admire the view of nature.

Even if you don’t go outside you can at least learn a new hobby to entertain yourself. Such as cooking, cleaning, meditating, working out, or learning how to program.

In the hot season you can enjoy cold beverages and go to an ice cream parlor nearby and try new flavors. According to Gallop News a recent poll found that 25% of young adults are typically more likely to enjoy summer than winter and this may be partly because students are away from school and in the comfort of their home. An anonymous student told me that “you can go to the beach and you can see hot mothers.”

In the winter it feels depressing going outside. It's usually gloomy outside and when you’re indoors - let's be honest - you’re not doing anything. In the summertime it's more sociable and you can see people gathering at the beach and the atmosphere is delightful. During the summer you can also get a tan at the beach and you don’t have to wear as much clothes. During the winter you have to wear beanies, scarfs, oversized sweaters, and boots to maintain equilibrium but in the summer you don’t have to worry about getting sick.

Even though Winter has fun activities which includes sledding, skiing, and hot chocolate, it's difficult because it never snows in Los Angeles. All these wonderful activities you will never enjoy because you live in Los Angeles and it never snows. The only season you can truly enjoy is Summer, while Winter is but a fleeting dream of illusion for us civilians of Los Angeles.
