The National Honor Society is a nationwide organization that recognizes high schoolers that meet high academic standards. At Neuwirth, scholars chosen to join NHS are juniors and seniors that have worked hard throughout high school to meet high academic standards. This is for juniors and seniors so if you are a freshman or sophomore maintain good grades and behavior to be eligible when you get to your junior or senior year.
The National Honor Society isn’t anything new to Neuwirth. With the pandemic NHS was put on hold, but resumed late 2021 by Ms. Bruno. Current NHS members were inducted (admitted as members) into NHS March 31st, 2022. Students were able to bring their loved ones to the ceremony so that they could watch their scholars’ huge accomplishment of being in NHS.
Scholars in NHS are required to have a minimum GPA of 3.5. To apply, scholars must get two letters of recommendation from teachers, write an essay, and also be willing to participate in several volunteer activities. Most importantly, scholars must be able to balance both academics and this extracurricular commitment.
Scholars in NHS become eligible for scholarships and stand out more when applying to colleges and universities. If you’re a junior or senior, definitely keep your behavior in check and keep your grades up. NHS is beneficial as you will be recognized for being an exemplary student, you will build and improve your communication skills, and you will improve your community with services like volunteering.
The advisor for NHS, Ms. Bruno, explains that NHS is beneficial for college applications because “Colleges will know that not only are you an excellent scholar, but also a dedicated leader who has contributed to society.” Furthermore, colleges will see the commitment the student in NHS has, and be confident in knowing what makes that student a good asset to their school and community for their leadership and service roles.
NHS members hold their meetings on Mondays after school. These meetings are held in room 114. The members go over volunteering opportunities such as, poster making for school related events, tutoring kids during AVID, and volunteering outside of school. Members also go over policies, expectations, fundraising ideas, and participation as NHS members need to remain consistent with helping others while maintaining their honorable/admirable academic performance.
NHS is big on giving back to the community. Students giving back to their community helps them with connecting with people in their community and businesses that may provide mentorship, career opportunities, or college and job recommendations. Bruno emphasizes that “the school and the larger community benefit by being the recipient of service from young role models who make a positive impact.”
NHS has helped the community by collaborating with the Environmental Action Club in which NHS members volunteered by helping plant trees, helped with last year’s graduation ceremony, helped with the recent Neuwirth Health Fair, and tutoring during AVID. Soon we will be partnering with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for a blood drive to take place February 14th, 2023.
Juniors are being invited to apply for NHS in December. If you’re a junior and are interested in helping out our community, looking good on college applications, and building skills and relationships then you should maintain good grades to be eligible for a spot in NHS.
