The elections are around the corner and time is ticking down. On May 25-26, 2023 elections will be held to see who will be the president of the class of 2024. With the position available 3 candidates are running to take over. The three candidates who are running are Cesar Chavez, Hely Quintero, and Erick Hipolito. To those wondering which candidate to vote for, we asked each one a question during the interview “What would you do as senior class president of Neuwirth?” Each of the candidates responded with realistic goals. As a student president one can't control the whole school or employ any rules if wanted to do so like changing the days students go to school. This is what the candidates had to say.
Cesar Chavez:
As the 12th grade president, I would of course be part of the ASB meetings but more importantly, I would make changes. I believe that this school needs to make changes and I would challenge some of the school's policies like the hoodie policy which I know most students don’t like. Of course, I’m not saying get rid of the hoodie policy but try to make it less strict on students. We should also try changing some of the spirit week celebrations, they’re not bad at all, but we should change it to what students are actually interested in, as long as it doesn’t go against the school rules.
Something I promise to do as president- and it may sound boring -but it’s to communicate with the students. Even if the students don’t have any suggestions or don’t want any changes, ASB should always have open ears for suggestions. With the suggestions we get, we can discuss and act on them. If the suggestion doesn’t work out, ASB should communicate back with the people, the students why it didn’t work out. Communication is very valuable in order for changes to happen , and valuable to know what we are doing wrong and what ways yo fix those problems so that it doesn’t continue to happen
ASB should not be able to function without the voices of the students of Neuwirth being heard. We are students, we are the change!!!
Erick Hipolito:
I definitely want to hear people out from our grade, I’d be in charge of spirit weeks, fundraisers, and schoolwide activities, so running it by people in our grade like what they want to see is something I absolutely look forward to
With the senior committee next year, prom will be an activity where everyone’s voice will be heard and have aspects they each love like food, place, time, etc. I wanna see if I can make it more affordable, and make it the best for everyone.
As far as grad night, where the senior class will get to go to an amusement park, I think I’d be able to influence it and tailor it to meet the needs of everyone so they have the best time
The ASB group meetings will definitely be open to whoever wants to join and speak up and I will actively listen to any grievances or complaints, trying to actively make it apparent that I care
Hely Quintero:
I think I have always been a very driven person, someone that enjoys helping others and knows how to take charge of things when others couldn’t. I’m a very friendly person that is always listening to my classmates and someone that they can depend on, which I think is very important for someone that wants to take the role of president for senior year. I have always talked about wanting a last good year in high school with my classmates, which shows how important getting this position is to me.
I don’t think that I would necessarily bring change because so far I think everyone part of ASB has done a great job doing what they can. However, I would like to include many more activities for the seniors that would make our year more memorable. I would like to start doing things during lunch that anyone can enjoy. As for spirit week, I would like to include what everyone has to say about it and have more fun dress up days.
I would like to bring ideas such as dress up days, water balloon fight, color wars, haunted houses, and a lot more with the help of my classmates. I think most importantly what my grade cares about is all of our senior activities which I have several ideas we can all do, which includes having a great prom.
For those who are in 11 graders who are reading this. You should really consider which candidate you will support. As this will affect your future events that you'll experience during your senior year. So the big question is “who will you vote for as senior president?” Make sure you vote on Thursday, May 25 and Friday, May 26 to find out.
