Welcome to 5th Grade!
My name is Diane Epping. I am the youngest of six children and was born and raised in Kenosha. I have a fifteen and a half year old son, Kyle, who attends Tremper and is very involved in sports. We have a small dog, Ace, who has been with us for 8 years.
This is my 20th year teaching in the Kenosha Unified School District. I started my career as a special education teacher and moved to general education. I have taught 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades at various schools. This is my 8th year at Pleasant Prairie Elementary. I am very excited to be teaching fifth grade again this year. Your child will become very familiar with Miss Brzozowski, the special education teacher, coming in and out of the classroom.
About Our Classroom
Update: Every Friday the Update page on my website will have the information for the following week . This will inform you of the homework and activities that are due the next week. Included on the update are the weekly spelling and vocabulary words. Please find a safe place for the Update, so your child can view it nightly to study and see when their work is due.
Assigment Notebook: Your child should be bringing home an assignment notebook nightly. THE ASSIGNMENT NOTEBOOK MUST BE SIGNED EVERY NIGHT AFTER YOUR CHILD COMPLETES HIS OR HER HOMEWORK! The assignment notebook will be checked for a parent’s signature. If your child’s notebook is signed every day, they will earn a treat at the end of the week.
Thursday Folders: On Thursdays the Pleasant Prairie Folder will be sent home. This folder contains important information from the office. This folder needs to be returned the next school day.
Star Student: Each full week there will be a star student. The chosen student will be given an activity poster to be filled out and returned by Friday of that week. The student will be presenting their poster to the class. The star student will also be the helper of the week.
Spelling, Vocabulary and Math Facts: Every Friday, your child will bring home assigned fridge facts for the following week. The assigned spelling, vocabulary and math facts needs to be studied nightly. Math, spelling and vocabulary assessments will be given on Thursdays.
Spelling: Students will be given a spelling assessment, so I can evaluate which level of spelling words they will work on. Your child’s words will be individualized according to their needs. Spelling lists will be given out on Fridays. Weekly spelling work needs to be completed and is due on Thursdays. Every two weeks, an assessment will be given on the words assigned to your child.
Math: Our curriculum for math this year will once again be Everyday Mathematics. Due to enrichment and intervention, your child may have another fifth grade teacher for math. Please read the update to find out what math homework is due and when.
Snacks: Our class will have a snack time Monday-Thursday. Snacks need to be healthy or your child won’t be allowed to eat it. Some suggestions are fruit, yogurt, popcorn, granola bars, etc… Students may bring in water to drink, but juice, pop, etc… are not allowed. On Fridays we will eat lunch in the classroom. Your child may purchase a lunch or bring a lunch or snack.
Behavior Plan: There is a behavior plan for room 300 and classroom rules that every child will need to follow.
- Follow directions at all times.
- Be a quiet listener.
- Respect others and treat them how you wish to be treated.
- Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
- Raise hand and wait to be called on before speaking.
There is a chart with green, yellow, red and black. Every child starts every day on green. When a student is not following the rules, they will get a warning. The second time they will have to move their clip to yellow.. For every other rule not followed, the student will move their clip to down. If your child reaches red, they will miss a recess. If their clip ends up on black, there will be an email or phone call home.
Transportation: Please make sure that I know how your child will get home from school. If there are any changes to the daily schedule, make sure you either call the school, send me an Email or note. If I don’t get a message, your child will go home as they normally would on that day. Your child telling me how they are getting home is not allowed.
