Franklin Area School District

Continuity of Education Plan

Welcome to Franklin Area School District's Continuity of Education Plan. The overall goal is to ensure the district continues to meet the educational needs of all students during this prolonged school closure. All students in grades 7-12 currently have school-issued devices that can be utilized at home. We have issued Chromebooks to students in grades 3 through 6 that requested one through their elementary building. Students in K-2 will access materials electronically through Google Classroom, unless they have notified their teacher to receive paper packets.

Below you will find links to technical support for staff, students, and families, and a link to our Coronavirus (COVID-19) communications page. The links on this page also highlight the plans for remote learning (enrichment and review) which began on Wednesday, April 1 for elementary students and secondary students. The District is working directly with families of students in special education programs to implement IEPs in a remote learning situation. There are also links to provide resources for families to obtain broadband internet at their home at little or no cost.

Finally, the District has provided a curated list of online resources to provide enrichment opportunities, reinforce prior learning, and provide a springboard for other independent learning activities that support the academic and emotional well-being of our students. These resources are for students and parents/guardians who might be looking for other activities to engage elementary and high school students while at home.

Definition of Terms

Continuity of Education: Continuity of Education is the overall term for any educational practices that occur in the event of a prolonged school closure. It is important students have the opportunity to maintain and develop concepts/skills while away from a customary school environment. This can be done through Planned Instruction or Enrichment and Review.

Enrichment and Review: This is current model Franklin Area has adopted and implemented. Enrichment and Review consists of providing students activities and assignments aimed at addressing skills and concepts that have been previously taught throughout the school year. These activities are meant to reinforce and extend students’ prior learning, engage in creativity, and provide opportunities for growth in their grade level skills. There are no new standards and/or skills addressed through the enrichment and review model.

Planned Instruction: Planned Instruction is formal teaching and learning similar to that which occurs in a classroom setting. Within this process, teachers use planned courses of instruction on new concepts/skills aligned to grade level standards. Teachers assess the learning of their students and make adjustments to instruction based upon student progress. In order to receive grade and credit, students must attend regularly and complete the course requirements.
