"Guitar, Loneliness and Blue Planet"
- Written by Gotoh (Bocchi), Kossoku Band
Lyrics (Genius english translation)
A sudden evening shower falls, ah, I don't have an umbrella
Who cares how the sky's feeling?
When it's time for the seasons to change
What are you supposed to wear?
Spring and fall, where did they go?
The pressure of information is suffocating
I can hear myself breathing louder and louder
But it's strange. I can't hear the sounds of the world
It's not enough, not enough
When I couldn't even makе a sound I tried to scream louder
To whom should I show who I am?
So I'm singing just likе the fool I am
Entrusting my thoughts to the stars
The process of replacing an elixir is quite annoying
I slightly touched my chipped nail
The 300mm body screams desperately
For music, this is the earth
Grabbing the air, punching the sky
Nothing happens, I'm powerless
But when you strum that iron with your hand
It looks like something has changed
Yet, why am I getting so fired up?
I'm singing just like the fool I am
All alone on this blue planet
I've heard lots of sounds
Continuously rotating for billions of years
Even if it's just for a moment...ah
I am, I am, I am right here
When I couldn't even make a sound I tried to scream louder
I screamed without being able to let out anything
So I'm singing just like the fool I am
Entrusting my thoughts to the stars
Guitar, loneliness and blue planet explore themes related to social anxiety, isolation and passion. It does this by bearing the perspective of the writer, Bocchi, who writes about her traumatic experience living a life with a social anxiety. The song describes Bocchi’s journey in three parts. Firstly, Verse 1, pre-chorus and chorus goes explores the mess that is Bocchi’s mental space, emphasise how disconnected she is from society. It reveals how Bocchi finds this isolation miserable, how desperate she wants to get out of it. Furthermore, it also shows Bocchi feels trapped, how she feels trapped by her overwhelming bottled-up thoughts, and the burden they have on her. Secondly, verse 2, pre chorus and chorus mirrors the idea of the first part of the song, but goes further to show how Bocchi feels useless and underserving of other’s attention since she feels that she is not good enough. This shows how Bocchi’s social anxiety overcomes her hopes and needs for social interactions, also conveying Bocchi’s sense of inferiority. Next, verse 2 also explores Bocchi’s passion for her guitar since it is her only form of expression. It emphasises how to Bocchi, her guitar is her everything and her entire world. More importantly, it suggest how Bocchi learning the guitar has given her something to feel proud for, giving her a new sense of identity, something that is very important later on. Lastly, the bridge, pre-chorus 3 and chorus 3 emphasises how the pride and sense of identity that Bocchi gained from learning the guitar has increased her self esteem by just a little bit. Bocchi still suffered from social anxiety and isolation, she still finds herself struggling to let herself trust others, but she is willing to let some of her worries go, and let something beyond her control guide her through this complicated journey.
I can reflect on the theme of emotional expression in this song and how a large of part of Bocchi’s suffering is caused by her inability to express herself. This resulted in Bocchi bottling up her negative feelings and thoughts as she couldn’t find a way to express them initially, leading to further isolation and anxiety. Bocchi describes her inability to vent her feelings as a trap, a place where she can only scream without making a scribble of sound. This showing how hard she is trying to express herself but deep down, couldn’t let herself be vulnerable as she didn’t feel safe enough. However, Bocchi later learns to express herself through the guitar, and she finds pride and a sense of identity in doing that. Bocchi talks about how the guitar became her entire word for her because of this, and how being able to express herself while playing it changed her. The lyrics also discusses how being able to express herself gave her more freedom, a contrast to the “suffocating” pressure of information and spiral. This ability to explore more places also emphasises the importance for us to have a way to emotional express ourselves as it lets us find more about ourselves. Thus, we are able to learn more about our own strength and perks, giving us more confidence and sense of self-identity in our lives which could let us think more positively in life.
(In the anime, Bocchi did leave a huge impact on her bandmates through her perseverance and determination to constantly improve herself. Yes, it was due to anxiety and I don't think that just because she did get better justifies the pain she went through but the great writing in this show is that even though she thought she was useless initially, she was already affecting others around. Best example is probably the lyrics of "If I could be constellation", where an extrovert with social anxiety talks about how Bocchi's fight to beating her social anxiety made the anxious extrovert rethink about the facade she constantly puts on.)
I can reflect on the theme of social anxiety and how it can cause many other psychological symptoms that can harm us emotionally while maybe not having a trigger itself. Bocchi’s lyrics emphasised hard on how she suffered from having social anxiety and feeling disconnected from it. It perfectly describes how Bocchi’s feeling of being disconnected is caused by her feeling feeling that she cannot trust others. And the thing is that this choice whether to trust or not is not Bocchi’s choice, the lyrics emphasises it just happens, and this might also suggest that this lack of a trigger for Bocchi’s anxiety also reflects on anxiety can happen in our world as well, and how it doesn’t necessarily need a trigger. Our personalities may just be more closed off than others, and we may just not be comfortable enough naturally to be vulnerable to others even if we really want to vent our feelings out. I think another important effect of Bocchi’s social anxiety here is her feeling that she needs to put on a facade to let others like her. In the actual anime, she didn’t do this physically but rather imagined a lot of scenarios where is a popular guitarist who is extroverted, well-known and liked. The idea itself leans more towards her senes of inferiority but it does how social anxiety may force to us to change ourselves into someone whom we are not just to meet others expectations. Therefore, we should all look out for one another and try to be a honest and positive influence to one another so that those who are hiding under their facades may feel more safe around others and act more like themselves while feeling less pressure and loneliness.
I can reflect on the theme of inferiority and how it can cause us to feel underserving and worthless, like how it made Bocchi feel that as a result of her social anxiety. Bocchi described her sense of inferiority as a feeling that makes her feel “powerless” and something that made her life feel like it was trapped in a “dizzying spiral”, something that seemingly goes on for infinity. Bocchi later goes on to write about how she feel that she’s “powerless”, emphasising how Bocchi feels useless in the things that she do. This conveys the seriousness of Bocchi’s sense of inferiority and how to makes her feel that she herself is not enough and is the problem to all her other mental health issues. Bocchi also writes about how she feels and is afraid that others are against her because she is not enough. She is terrified that she will be judge as a result of her social anxiety, revealing her lack of trust towards humanity. Bocchi’s sense of inferiority is also the reason why her inner conflict between wanting to ask other for help but not letting herself do it exist. The constant fear of being inferior to others madeherfeel isolated and disocnnected, which hurt Bocchi's a lot as shown in the lyrics, especially considering how humans are all social creatures. However, when Bocchi picked up the guitar, she started to feel more unique and proud about it. And like all the other traumas that Bocchi experienced, her inferiority didn’t go away once she felt that she do deserve experiencing good despite her flaws, but she did learn to adapt and look past her negative thoughts and emotions. This shows how terrifying social anxiety can be, how the isolation and other symptoms it causes can trap us in a "dizzying spiral" where we lose who we are as a person. But it also shows that despite the lasting trauma it can cause, it can encoruage to imporve ourselves and ourmindests, to learn more skills and to think more positvely.
anime is 10/10 must watch if i finished the anime i prob would've focused on Kita's "if only i coud be constellation" ;-;
