Red Cat, An Ox

Anna Peterson (2018-19)

It depicts a galvanic cell. Galvanic cells consist of two half cells- an anode and a cathode. Galvanic cells use redox reactions to create a current. To remember which half of the reaction occurs where, chemistry students use “red cat, an ox.” The reduction occurs at the cathode, and the oxidation occurs at the anode. Thus, a red cat is in one half cell, and an ox is in the other.
