Polar molecules dissolve in water because water is polar and like dissolves like. Therefore, a polar bear should also dissolve in water. Water is polar because the oxygen atom is more electronegative (has a stronger attraction for electrons) than the hydrogen atoms. When a polar or ionic substance (such as salt: NaCl) is put in water (is the solute), the more negative oxygen sides want to surround the positive ion and the more positive hydrogen sides want to surround the negative ion. If the water's pull is greater than the intermolecular forces between the solute atoms, the solute dissolves.
