Phagocytosis

This mural is a reference to the movie Jaws. The cover of Jaws has a large shark swimming up from the ocean towards some helpless people at the surface. The mural has a large amoeba swimming up from a body of water towards some helpless bacteria at the surface. The orange mitochondria looks like the amoeba's eye if it was a shark. Phagocytosis is the process by which an amoeba eats; it engulfs smaller creatures such as bacteria in its membrane, forming a small internal compartment called a phagosome, where the creature can be digested.
