Gaia is the Greek god of earth, or 'Mother Earth.' This mural shows the sharp contrast of the earth before and after industrial humans made their mark. It can inspire people to change their lifestyle to decrease the negative effects depicted on the right of the mural.
This mural shows the 'day' of earth's history, where the sky is blue; the green tree bears fruit and is filled with happy animals (including a white bird family, two tigers, a bear, two gazelles, a monkey, a green and pink bird, an indigenous person, and two red birds); there are many diverse animals (lion, elephant, 2 deer, 2 giraffes, a rhinoceros, and 2 anteaters) below the tree in a grassland with some trees in front of a multicolored mountain range; a river flows from the base of the tree (a white bird swims in it and the female deer drinks from it); and under the roots of the tree, DNA designs are visible, signifying the life of the world and the diversity of the species found there. In the 'night' of the earth, the tree is burning; the creatures who once found refuge there are fleeing; the sky is gray and filled with smog from a factory, a nuclear power plant, and airplanes; the mountains have been replaced by skyscrapers; there is a power line running from the tree to the city over gravelly ground; there are red shapes sticking out of the ground (which could represent worms or animal carcasses); and the DNA of the earth seems to be surrounded by more viruses. In between the two, there are many eyeballs, as well as a mother sitting atop a snake pedestal. On either side of her are humans, one bringing flowers and the other bringing nothing. There is also a hand that may be preventing the humans from the night side from crossing over.
