English Graspers is an interactive, game-based learning module designed to strengthen students’ reading comprehension through an engaging and immersive experience. Set in a mysterious detective universe, learners take on the role of young investigators—Hansel or Gretel—tasked with solving exciting language mysteries.
Combining elements of storytelling, strategy, and interactive challenges, this Multimedia Instructional Project (MIP) transforms traditional reading lessons into a quest filled with clues, missions, and rewards. With each task completed, learners unlock new strategies like skimming, using context clues, and predicting—turning passive reading into active exploration.
By integrating Gagné’s Nine Events of Instruction, English Graspers not only builds essential reading skills but also fosters critical thinking, motivation, and learner autonomy. Whether solving missing pages or navigating a mysterious island, every step is a learning opportunity wrapped in an adventure.
Get ready to crack the code—because reading has never been this thrilling!
Content:
Improve students' comprehension of academic texts.
Enhance grammatical accuracy in written and spoken English.
Improve pronunciation, especially in professional contexts.
Increase listening proficiency through exposure to different accents and real-life scenarios.
Integrate multimedia for a learner-centered, immersive experience.
Targeted Learners:
The primary audience is first-semester students of the English for Professional Communication program at UiTM. They are digital natives with varying proficiency levels in English, especially in comprehension and pronunciation.
They benefit from visual, auditory, and game-based learning formats.
Proposed Content:
Reading: Main ideas, inference, vocabulary in context.
Grammar: Tenses, modal verbs, conditionals (e.g., grammar fill-in-the-blanks).
Listening: Podcasts, accents, dictation (e.g., crossword tasks).
Pronunciation: Phonetic exercises, word stress, peer-assessed roleplays.
The current textbook-based approach limits learner enaggement and fails to address digital-native preferences. a gap was identified between actual student performance and desired learning outcomes in key areas. The MIP is designed to bridge this gap through multimedia, interactive content that aligns with modern learning expectations.
Formative Evaluation: One-on-one and group evaluations, checkpoints, hints during tasks.
Summative Evaluation: Final score, badges, task completion reviews.
Content:
1. Formative Feedback (During the Learning Process):
• Learners receive instant feedback when completing activities (e.g., green checkmarks for correct answers, hints for incorrect ones in drag-and-drop tasks like in Frame 12).
• Hints and tips provided by characters like Detective Brown offer scaffolding and reinforce learning without directly giving the answer (Frames 15, 17, 28).
• Learners are prompted to review their answers before submission (Frame 18), encouraging critical thinking.
2. Summative Feedback (After Task Completion):
• Learners receive a performance summary at the end of missions (Frame 22) with scores, badges, and progress tracking (Frames 8, 34, 37).
• Celebratory messages like “Well Done, Master Detective!” and “Case Closed” (Frames 19, 21) reinforce effort and success.
3. Reinforcement for Motivation:
• Positive reinforcement is given through visuals, sound effects, and progression rewards (e.g., ranking from Junior to Master Detective).
• Feedback encourages retrying tasks with the option to replay for better outcomes (Frame 22), supporting retention.
