It has been two marvelous years since I first entered the doors to Humberside. Over time, I have learned plenty about navigating HCI and its community. Whether you are arriving at Humberside for grade 9 or even returning for grade 12, you can surely benefit from these tips I wish I knew before coming to Humberside:
1. Join a club. For a summary of my upcoming points, check out my article, “Why Joining A Club Is An Essential Part of the Highschool Experience.” When I came to Humberside, I knew that clubs were the perfect place to start forming connections. It’s never too late to join, so don’t get discouraged if you’re hesitating to jump on the occasion come September. It gets better once you find out how many clubs there are that can cater to your interests. If you are wondering what to join, check out my article, “Introduction to the Clubs and Councils of Humberside.” Remember, there is no limit to how many virtual clubs you can join, so don’t be shy to experiment to find what you like best.
2. Make new friends. Although for many it can be easier said than done, branching out may be the best thing for you. Don’t be afraid to get to know different types of people. Taking the extra time to get to know your classmates can create a better school environment for you. You can even try saying hello to a student you see in the hallway, regardless of if you know them or not. Remember, you can only grow when you’re not in your comfort zone. Plus, to make things even easier, you already have a new friend: me!
3. Create bonds with your teachers. Finding out more about who they are will help you feel confident in the classroom if you want to contribute to the conversation. A few ways you can apply this in your classes would be by asking them about their interests or how they spent their summer break. Additionally, don’t be afraid to ask them for help; that’s what they’re here for!
4. Get familiar with studying. A large fraction of your time will be spent studying, so creating sufficient study habits early on can make your job that much easier for the rest of the year. Some of my personal favourite study apps are Quizlet, Cell Biology, and Khan Academy.
5. Be uniquely you. Don’t be afraid to be yourself. Always show your true self and don’t listen to others’ negativity. There are over 1200 students at Humberside and everyone is uniquely themselves, so you should be too!
