To the surprise of many students, a new staff member was introduced this year, and she just so happens to be a dog. Daisy, a little white dog owned by Mrs. Mansfield, was introduced to the student body as the official full-time therapy dog here at Pleasant Valley Junior High in August of 2021. Many students have been ecstatic about the new addition to the PVJH team while others have been unimpressed. But what are the true benefits and disadvantages of having a therapy dog at school? Who here is benefiting from the extra support, and who is undisturbed or even struggling with the change?
Therapy dogs have been used in places such as hospitals to lower the stress levels of patients and to help them open up to doctors. Although the science behind this is still being researched, first-hand experiences tell us that therapy animals have helped to reduce pain, anxiety, and loneliness. Therapy dogs are a soothing presence in an otherwise stress-inducing environment. 8th grader, Maya Vargas, states that having Daisy at PVJH has helped her to relax when she is feeling anxious and that being able to go into Mrs. Mainsfield’s office is nice and has now become a part of their morning routine. Another Student, Eliza, stated that having Daisy during band has brought her joy.
But some students do not think that having Daisy around has as many advantages. Student Sherry Tang said that she believes that Daisy only likes a few select people and does not give you actual therapy.
In conclusion, having Daisy at PVJH has been a big change for students and teachers. Having a Therapy dog at school has helped many students to destress while others have been unaffected. Who is to say if having Daisy is positive or negative. All we know is that she will be back next year to continue her job as the official PVJH Therapy dog.
