Preparing for High School: What are Some Students Doing?

By: Anna Boens

With the end of eighth grade coming around the corner most students are looking forward to the upcoming summer fun. But the end of eighth grade also means the start of high school.

Students had the difficult task of signing up for classes mid to late February this year. Student Elizabeth Otts was telling me about the hard decisions she has to make when choosing classes. “I had to decide whether or not I wanted to take AP Human Geography or modus. I also had to choose between electives so I was choosing between Orchestra, principles of biomedical science, intro to engineering, and Spanish 2,” Elizabeth said.

Many people have given eighth graders the advice to get involved in clubs. Elizabeth also told me about how she was finding clubs she wanted to join. Elizabeth said, “I haven't chosen completely yet, but I kind of just picked what fits my interests and what might fit into my schedule next year.” This is great advice for students who want to get involved and find clubs they want to join next year.

Students not only have to prepare for high school academically but they have high school sports to also prepare for. Camille Wood, an eighth-grader, is planning on joining the golf team this upcoming year. She has been doing many things to reach her goal. Camille has been enrolling in competitions and is practicing all the time to get ready for the season. Camille said, “I also plan to practice as much as possible during the winter before golf season starts.” If you are planning on joining high school sports something you could do is practice or find competitions to do to get you ready.

In the end, there are many ways incoming freshmen can prepare for high school.
