Following a triumphant 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge last week, Real Madrid defeated Chelsea 5-4 in aggregate in their quarter-final tie, and advanced to the Champions League semi-final on Tuesday night.

Ancelotti's team came into the match with an upper-hand after Benzema's hattrick delivered a significant 3-1 win. Tuchel's Chelsea fought hard at the Bernabeu, defeating Real Madrid 3-2 in the second tie, but that was still not enough to eliminate the 13-times Champions League winner out of the competition.

Throughout the majority of the tie, Chelsea was the superior team after having a 2-0 advantage 51’ minutes into the game followed by Werner's goal at 75' minutes, putting them ahead in aggregate (4-3). Real Madrid returned to level matters soon after, when substitute Rodrygo volleyed a beautiful cross from Modric straight into the net, to take both teams into extra time. Before long, Benzema slammed a header into the net in extra time to take Real Madrid back on top with a 5-4 win on aggregate.

"We won because we had the energy to keep the match alive. The players were brave and faced it like warriors," said Real Madrid manager, Ancellotti.

Unai Emery's Villareal advanced to the semis as well after a hard-fought aggregate win against 2020's Champion League winners Bayern Munchen. It was almost a definitive win for Bayern, but the yellow submarine managed a tactical defeat which put two Spanish teams into the semi-finals of the Champions league.
