Twenty-seven years after its initial appearance in television, the popular sitcom, Friends, remains as one of the most iconic and influential television shows of all time. From the series’ launch on September 22, 1994, the show has risen in popularity and has been the subject of conversation due to the conflicting opinions on many of the characters.

One of the most common, controversial topics on Friends is the continuous criticism towards Ross Geller-played by David Schwimmer. He stars as a successful paleontologist in New York who falls for his friend, Rachel Green, who was played by Jennifer Anniston. Although his character appears to be perfect, he has displayed narcissistic traits on various occasions.

In season 3, prior to the ''we were on a break'' incident, Ross had expressed his anger over Rachel’s lack of attention to their relationship, and her friendship with a male coworker. Throughout these episodes, he comes off as controlling and self-absorbed. He's only focused on his happiness rather than considering the happiness of Rachel, regardless of the fact that Rachel feels happy with where she is in her life. However, he still chooses to push that aside and fixate on his desire for attention.

Additionally, he displays several signs that he is a hypocrite. When Joey starts crushing on Rachel, Ross tells him that nothing should stand in the way of him and his crush. However, when he reveals that it was Rachel, Ross changes his mind immediately while also getting angry at Joey. This changes when Ross begins crushing on Charlie, Joey’s ex. Ross doesn't communicate with Joey before getting together with her, showing how he will change his own principles when it benefits him.

Overall, while Ross may be regarded as a kind and considerate human, he also displays many signs of narcissism, earning his title of one of the most controversial characters in friends.
