Medical Advancements of 2022

By Chloe Kramer

Medicine has been constantly evolving since it was first practiced in 2600 BC, and 2022 is no exception. These advancements were developed with the motive to help the millions of people who are affected by them. In the USA, 1 in 10 people have diabetes. Diabetes affects how the body processes food into energy. A potential therapy that doctors have created is a once-weekly injection that has both GIP and GLP-1 in it. This injection's purpose is to control blood sugar. The GLP-1 and GIP receptors cause the pancreas to release insulin and block the hormone that regulates blood sugar, limiting blood sugar spikes after a meal. The results it has shown is potentially making it the most effective therapy for type 2 diabetes. Another big medical advancement is using an AI to detect sepsis early on. Sepsis is a severe inflammatory response to infection and a leading cause of hospitalization and death worldwide, killing 11 million people a year, many of them children, and AI has become a new tool at detecting sepsis. Using algorithms, the AI is able to detect several key symptoms by monitoring patients medical records as new information is added. Both these advancements and the many others that are being created will save countless lives.
