The songs on the radio are good. I mean, they’re on the radio for a reason. But let’s be honest- hearing the same songs by the same artists on a loop can get tiring after a while. And there’s so many fantastic new artists that have never been heard on mainstream radio. If you’re looking to support some new musicians, you’ve come to the right place
The Bobby Lees- This American rock band was founded in 2018 in Woodstock, New York. They premiered with their debut album “Beauty Pageant,” who’s cover ironically depicts the group in front of a chain-link fence and covered in mud. The thing about the Bobby Lees is that while they’ve only been around for a few years, they sound like a classic 80’s or 90’s grunge band. Think something like the first Nirvana album, with a vocal drawl like Dolores O’Riordan. This isn’t to compare an amazing group to music legends, just to give you an idea. My personal favorite song, “Hollywood Junkyard,” has powerful percussion and fantastically messy electric guitar. You should go stream it right now- you won’t regret it.
Tally Hall- Speaking of bands that sound like they’re from another time, the group Tally Hall has a classic 1960’s feel to it. Although the group is currently inactive, they’re music has a real fanbase. The song “Hidden In The Sand” has been quite popular on tik tok over the past few years, a soft lullaby with ukulele and fuzzy old-fashioned audio. Something that sets Tally Hall apart is that although their tunes are very upbeat, the lyrics tend to have a darker, more poetic meaning, and the music videos often have an unsettling feel. “Hidden In The Sand,” although the tune is sweet, is about heartbroken lovers. The accompanying music video is in the style of an old black-and-white cartoon, where a ship full of people sinks into the ocean. “The Ruler of Everything” is about a society being taken over by robots, and “Turn the Lights Off,” is about monsters. If you like old music and eerie themes, this is the group for you.
NOAH FINANCE- Noah is a British YouTube personality who, like the Bobby Lees, has only been releasing music since 2018. He debuted with the song “Asthma Attack,” and is currently releasing an EP, “My Brain After Therapy.” Noah has always been a huge fan of pop-punk, and his music certainly fits that theme. The timing of his music matches up perfectly with the pop-punk revival that we’re seeing right now. Most of his music deals with experiences he’s had in his own life, giving the songs a feel that is both personal and relatable. The song “Worms in My Brain” is a metaphor for how past trauma can affect your life, and “After Therapy” addresses how counseling won’t make all the pain go away. Noah is going on tour in America and the UK this summer, so tickets are on sale now for what looks to be an incredibly fun live performance.
Ashnikko- Born Ashton Nicole Casey, Ashnikko makes music that simply does not fit into one specific genre. Her music has been categorized into pop, hip-hop/rap, rock, and alternative. Her music style is fantastically loud, grotesque, and passionately unapologetic. Ashnikko’s aesthetic is no different, with bizarre, Tim Burton-like fashion, and their long blue hair being something of a trademark. Their single, “Stupid,” featuring Yung Baby Tate, when viral on tik tok, launching Ashnikko’s popularity. Although Ashnikko isn’t on the radio, she’s widely popular among the younger generation, especially in the queer and alternative community. Her song “Slumber Party,” featuring Princess Nokia has become very popular among gay and bi women on tik tok. Ashnikko is currently on tour in Europe.
Scene Queen- Hannah Collins, professionally known as Scene Queen, was signed onto Hopeless Records, the same label as Noah Finnce. Located in Hollywood, she came out with her first album last week, Bimbocore, featuring the already-blowing-up song “Pink Panther.” The first track is “Bring It On,” followed by five songs all with “pink” as the first word in the title. Similar to Ashnikko, her music is a meld of genres, primarily a pop and metal fusion. Most of her songs start with something of a rap verse, before launching into a banging electric guitar chorus. Her music is almost something like a Harley Quinn style- girly and femmine, but still aggressive, violent, and sarcastic. If you need to feel confident, hyped up, or just need to let some anger out, Scene Queen will be your new favorite artist.
