District Band: Are Junior High Students Prepared?
District band is a band concert that includes sixth through twelfth graders, and the band concert features the grades from youngest to oldest. The 8th graders are right in the middle of the bands.
Ishika is a tenor saxophone in 7th period band, and when I asked her if she was prepared for the district and concert, she answered,“Partially, I feel like we know what the music is, but we need to improve on the specialty aspect of the piece keeping up with the tempo.” An anonymous student who plays the clarinet was asked the same response and they responded,“ No. My band in particular does not do very well in dynamics and I don’t think we are prepared after only one month of practicing.”
A third student, Brett Fornash who plays the trombone, responded to the same question; “I feel like we are prepared because we have good time and we will be able to play our pieces and we continue to sound good and I think that we are prepared. We have a lot of fun during concerts and I think we will continue to sound good.” With these responses, the majority of the students interviewed said that the 8th grade band is not ready. However, with a bit of time, the group will be prepared for the concert.
