Battle of Breakfast

Waffles

By Alex Larsen

There has been a long standing debate between the superior breakfast food. This debate almost always boils down to pancakes and waffles. A naive person would believe that they are extremely similar foods. However, this is far from the truth. The differences between the ingredients, cooking process, and end result, result in waffles being the far superior breakfast food.

Pancakes

When someone wakes up in the morning, ready for a delicious breakfast, it may be hard for them to decide what to eat. Here are the reasons why people should eat pancakes rather than waffles.

Why Pancakes Are Better Than Waffles

Firstly, pancakes are much denser than waffles, so people will never be hungry after eating pancakes. As “The Breakfast Shoppe” states, “Pancakes are denser and more filling than waffles. It’s difficult to walk away hungry after eating a stack of pancakes” (“Pancakes vs. Waffles: Who’s the Real Winner?”). As this shows, when someone walks away from eating a stack of pancakes, they will feel satisfied and not hungry.

Another reason why pancakes are better than waffles is that it is easy to create shapes and add dyes to pancake batter to create images. When someone is cooking breakfast for another person’s birthday, they will most likely be more excited when seeing a cool picture rather than seeing a boring waffle. As one website states, “Turns out that ’ol ketchup bottle trick is the secret to making pancake shapes, too! Simply pour the batter into the bottle, place the lid back on, and make some super-fun pancakes” (Shelley). Can waffle batter be put into a ketchup bottle? No! Waffles have to be shaped in a very specific shape, which limits the creativity available when making waffles.

These are both reasons why pancakes are better than waffles, so next time the decision between pancakes and waffles crosses your mind, a great choice is pancakes!

Why Waffles are Superior to Pancakes

When it comes to batter, waffles contain more butter, sugar, and eggs. This results in a richer flavor. The ingredients combined with the cooking process also results in an end result that is crunchier.

Crunchy food is related to reducing stress. According to this article, a 2009 article found that people prefer crunchy food when stressed. This may be because of the cathartic feeling and noise of biting into waffles. The article also adds that mushy food is an indicator of spoilage. This shows how waffles can be a stress reliever while we are evolutionarily dispositioned to dislike pancakes. Many pancakes suffer the sad fate of becoming a soggy lump.

Many claim that pancakes are better by the simple virtue of being more convenient, but this is not true. Frozen waffles taste great and can be prepared quickly with minimal effort. Additionally, the process of creating a pancake leaves a lot of room for human error. With a waffle maker you simply put the batter in and get an even cook.

Overall, waffles are a better choice than pancakes. They are an easier and more convenient way to enjoy a better meal.
