Are Award Shows Relevant Anymore?

Over 46 million people watched The Oscars in 2000, while less than 17 million people tuned in to watch in 2022. Even ten years ago with The Grammys, there were over 39 million people watching, while in 2022, not even 10 million watched. There is no doubt that the amount of viewers has continued to decrease throughout the years, but is that because of a lack of interest? Eighth grade students Juha Kim and Amelia Morgart described their feelings toward The Grammys. “I think The Grammys were rigged,” Kim said. “I think they are corrupt, and as Juha said, Taylor Swift got robbed,” Morgart added. Classmate, Alana Skaja, described award shows as, “Not very interesting, kind of boring except for when people get slapped”. Social Studies teacher, Mr. Paul said, “I would rather watch paint dry”. On the other hand, language arts teacher Mrs. Ward said, “I think that award shows are fun because it is always interesting to see what other people think are popular”. Eighth grade, Avalon Anderson, agreed, “I love the Grammys- like so much! They let me see all of my favorite artists like Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X”. Owen Gilbeck said, “I love the Grammys. Everyone is so deserving and thankful, and you get to see all of the celebrities all dressed up”. In conclusion, there are plenty of perspectives on award shows, but the question is still up for debate. Are award shows relevant anymore, or have they lost their magic?
