Remembering September 11th, 2001

9/11 and The Display

September 11th, 2001 officially claimed the lives of 2,977 innocent people. Their names are physicalized in the display in front of you as a way to hold onto their memory for a little bit longer, an attempt to bring back the life that was taken from them. The word “sonder” represents the feeling associated with realizing that others lead a life as complex and intricate as oneself. I encourage you to look at this field of names and feel this sense of sonder. Remember that these names were people with families, jobs, passions, fears, desires, secrets, loves, and dreams. Remember that these people were humans who paid an unimaginable price, casualties of a situation they had no control over. Remember that these people were just like you before September 11th.

About This Display:

It’s my hope that this display is viewed regardless of politics, motives, and prejudice. I made this display with the express purpose of remembering the innocent people who died during the attacks. Sadly, the people I’ve worked so hard to remember were far from the last victims that can be attributed to the attacks. It would be ignorant to ignore the wars that followed and the civilians that lost their lives in countries abroad. These countries saw destruction and instability that simply cannot be quantified and especially not conceptualized through a display like this one. If I could, I would.
