In June of 2025, fashion and editorial enthusiasts around the world were greeted with the unexpected resignation of the editor-in-chief at American Vogue, Anna Wintour.
The news came as a shock to many, as Wintour has become a staple at Vogue, but is arguably the most powerful woman in fashion. She is often regarded as the “mother of the MET gala,” one of fashion’s biggest nights. She also serves as the muse for the popular film “The Devil Wears Prada” where she is portrayed by Anne Hathaway. It only makes sense that Wintour would serve this incredibly influential role at the world’s most popular fashion magazine.
Wintour joined the team at Condé Nast, Vogue’s mother company, in July of 1988. She has shared her creative genius at both British and American Vogue since then.
Wintour’s debut cover was released within her first year at the magazine. The cover featured supermodel Michaela Bercu, captured by photographer Peter Lindbergh. Although very simple, the cover was a true depiction of Anna’s classic and timeless style. She would go on to produce some of the magazines most iconic covers with cover stars such as Madonna, Michelle Obama, Naomi Cambell, and even LeBron James, a cover that would later be criticized for its racist undertones.
Even though Wintour was placed under fire more than once by the public, she returned with grace and elegance. As Anna Wintour wraps up her career at Vogue, fashion fans around the world are anxiously awaiting the arrival of her successor.
The Successor- Chloe Malle
Hailing from New York City and a graduate of Brown University, Chole Malle has been selected to serve as the next editor-in-chief at American Vogue. Malle is a well known fashion journalist, who has written for a few different editorials including The New York Times Style and a few freelance items for American Vogue.
Malle has an impressive education, with a degree from Brown, and experience at the Sorbonne in France. Although her education is extensive, her fashion choices have left Vogue readers wondering if she is the right choice for the high profile magazine.
Malle has officially taken office at Condé Nast, starting off her reign with the prestigious September issue which featured Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid, a choice of models that was criticized for its unoriginality, as both models have been featured countless times across the magazine’s history.
Although Malle is no stranger to the fashion industry, it should come as no surprise that she has big shoes to fill following Wintour’s departure.
