As the Winter Season is coming to an end, students are selecting new Co-Curriculars for the Spring season. There is a reason to be excited about trying out new activities as well as exploring interests, but it also should not be forgotten to look back on our and learn about others’ memories made during the Winter Co-Curriculars. So, in this article, read about experiences in Rise Up, Film Studies, and Dragonflies & Dragons.
Hosted by Ms. Hyde, Rise Up appeals to those looking to improve their baking skills. Focusing on French pastries, Rise Up meets on Thursdays and Fridays. Rise Up is open to both experienced and beginner bakers. Anyone who is willing to learn new skills is welcome in this Co-Curricular. Rise Up places all students in groups of two or three, making collaboration necessary. Baking does not always go exactly as planned, and some are more difficult than others. Ms. Hyde is always there to help, but also motivates students to figure stuff out on their own. This encourages students to problem solve as well as challenge their abilities. This Co-Curricular has a fun and exciting environment, and is the perfect pickup activity if one has had a less than great school day. Every Friday, members of Rise Up get to take home and eat whatever they baked, making a great end to the week every week. Reflecting how enjoyable this Co-Curricular is, it is quite popular and spots fill up fast. So next year, do not forget to sign up fast!
Meeting on Mondays and Thursdays, Film Studies is the perfect afternoon activity for those who take interest in cinema and what influences it. Film Studies is hosted by Mr. Belote, who encourages students to take a deep dive into the different movements shaping the films they examine. Every week, this Co-Curricular takes a look at an older, and usually lesser known film. One genre explored was French New Wave, as well as a variety of silent and black and white films. This exposes students to many films they would never have seen if it were not for this Co-Curricular. Teaching media analysis is important in a day and age where everyone is surrounded by thousands of different types of media at their fingertips constantly. Film Studies is a relaxing end to the day while also being informative and interesting. Located in Mr. Belote's cozy classroom, this Co-Curricular is perfect for those who take interest in movies and the influences that happen behind the scenes.
If spending time with children in a relaxed atmosphere sounds fun, then Dragonflies & Dragons is the perfect Co-Curricular for you. Dragonflies & Dragons, D&D for short, is hosted by Ms. Bartley, takes place once a week, either Monday or Friday and involves taking care of the children at the daycare Anna’s House. You can choose between staying inside building LEGO and playing chess, or doing sports outdoors. No matter which activity you decide to participate in, you will get a chance to leave stress and worries behind to connect with new people and build countless memories. David (grade 11) describes his experience in D&D: “I love playing with children and teaching them new things in this new world. Ms. Bartley also provides us with opportunities to be creative and to host games and events. One of the most amazing things I love to do is hosting basketball games for kids!I love this co-curricular because it gives me a chance to talk to, listen to, and understand the next generation.”
Furthermore the co-curricular is also a great help for the employees at the daycare, meaning that you also contribute to the local community. Overall, D&D is a very fun and relaxing Co-Curricular, which doesn’t require much effort and contributes to the local Staunton community.
