Stuart Hall is home to many activities, from interscholastic sports teams to a wide array of co-curriculars to weekend activities for the boarders. However, one favorite of some students here remains overlooked by the broader community. Originally a co-curricular, Badminton now takes place almost every Friday evening (7:00 pm-9:00 pm). Although it may be overshadowed in its popularity by other pastimes, Badminton maintains a small but consistent group.
Although some players, notably Mr. Arnold and Mr. Snyder, are skilled at the sport, no prior experience is needed to play. This makes it accessible to any student who wants to have fun in a low stakes environment at the end of the week. Two regular players, Sckolher Berry (‘26) and Han Cabe (‘26), both share that they had limited practice in the sport prior to joining. Cabe went on to state, “I love going because it’s challenging and it’s fun to be challenged.” This combination of casual fun mixed with challenge and the space to improve a new skill makes for an enjoyable weekly hobby!
One other benefit of the sport is the opportunity it gives to people to socialize with those they would not normally be around. This idea is shared by Cabe, “It makes the school culture richer because it lets people blend who don’t normally blend.” The small nature of Stuart Hall means that to a certain extent, everyone knows everyone. However, there are still separate social groups within the wider community. The social aspect of Badminton allows for people in different social circles to interact more, and possibly form bonds they would not have otherwise. As Han Cabe wisely put it, Badminton makes the school culture richer. So, be sure to show up to this week's Badminton! Challenge, fun, and possible new friendships await.
