With four spring sports sending athletes to the 3A WIAA State Championships, Timberline athletics have been pretty successful this season.
Blazers Baseball has clinched the number five spot at state, after recently claiming their first District 3/4 3A title since 2009. The team no doubt has a lot to be proud of from this season. Kaleb McNeely highlights this, “At the end of the day though, I want for me and the team to be able to look back at our season and be proud of everything we have accomplished,” he says, “[We are the] Number 5 team in the state heading into the tournament, league champions, district champions, and so on.”
Timberline's Track and Field team is sending four athletes to state. Azaria Landry competed in Girl’s Long Jump, Shayla Cordis competed in Triple Jump, Peyton Willard placed 7th in the Boys 110 m hurdles, and Billy Ray Robertson placed 6th in the Ambulatory 100 m dash and 400 m run. Prior to the event, confidence and morale couldn’t be higher across the board. Willard says, “I really just want to see myself and the team come out knowing we did our best whether we win or lose."
Following an errorless game at the 3A District Championships, the Blazers Women's Fastpitch team fought hard at state for the second year in a row. The team went into the competition focused with one goal: to play as well as possible. It took a lot for them to get here, and there was a lot for them to prove. Jasmyn Polanco believes their key to success was their willingness to work as a team. But, although they did not win the whole thing, they made it far. Polanco says, “Ultimately, we’re all just proud to be here and to represent the school.”
The Blazers golf teams sent 6 players from the girl's team and 1 from the boy's team to state. Placing 7th at Districts, the girls team is hoped to snatch a high position. Ashley Nguyen says that their success stems from the idea that, “as much as we support one another, we also push each other to be better and take practices seriously.”
Recently named First Team All South Sound Conference for Golf, Oliver Vandewark swung his way to state, shooting a 79 and 85 at the district tournament. Going into this tournament, he hopes to enjoy his time there, “In reality there are guys out there twenty times better than I’ll ever be, so wanting to win is unrealistic.” he says, “But, another goal I have is to just stay happy the whole round and ensure I do my best.”
