BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT - Please bring your student's school supplies, family photo for our School Family display, and the Getting To Know Your Child form that you should receive in the mail a few days before this event.
DAILY FOLDER – Our daily folder serves as a great communication tool between school and home. Please check your child’s take home folder every evening. There is a place inside for papers, transportation notes, lunch money, etc... Your child needs to bring this folder to and from school every day. After you have looked through your child’s folder, be sure to remove papers and initial the comment’s page.
RECESS - Depending on the weather, we will either be on the playground, in the gym or our classroom. Comfortable shoes your child can manage and run safely in is highly recommended. We will try to go outside as much as possible, even in the winter. Please make sure your child dresses appropriately for the weather. Heavy coats, gloves, and even hats may be needed. Be sure to label all of your child’s belongings so that we can easily find them. Remember, the weather in the morning may not be the same weather at recess time, so keep an eye on the forecast.
BIRTHDAY – Birthday celebrations will be scheduled as close to your child’s birthday as possible. If you choose to send in treats, please have them here by our scheduled lunch time. If your child has a summer birthday we will celebrate their 1/2 birthday. If you host a birthday party and would like to bring in invitations, please make sure there are enough for everyone in the class.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT - Love & Logic, Conscious Discipline, and BIST
Love & Logic is a process by which children grow through their mistakes and learn from the consequences of their choices. Love & Logic provides practical tools and techniques that help adults achieve respectful, healthy relationships with children. It is based on a psychologically sound parenting and teaching, whole-child philosophy. For More Info Visit Love & Logic
Conscious Discipline is a comprehensive social, emotional, and behavioral management approach to creating safe, connected, problem solving classrooms. It consists of 3 components:
Safety through self-regulation (breathing/safe place) *The safe place is a space in our room where the children can go if they are mad, sad or missing mom & dad. It is our classroom’s emotional regulation center. Children can be directed there as a place to breath, calm themselves and to reconnect.
Connection through the school family (rituals/routines) *Please be sure to send in a family picture, so that it can be displayed in our classroom.
Problem solving through changing our perception & response to conflict (understanding feelings & having a voice)
For More Info Visit Conscious Discipline
The Behavior Intervention Support Team (BIST) is a school-wide behavior program developed with a purpose similar to other school-wide behavior programs, to provide teachers, students, and administrators with consistent tools and strategies to respond to inappropriate student behavior.
PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES - A SignUp Genius invite will be sent out early October to schedule your conference. This will give us an opportunity to speak privately about how well your child is doing and discuss any areas that we can work on together to best support your child’s continued growth. Please do not hesitate to ask questions at any time. I want to make sure all of your child’s needs are being addressed. A Sign Up Genius invite will be sent out in early October for you to sign up for a conference time.
GOALS - My goal as your child’s 1st grade teacher in partnership with YOU, is to help your child learn skills that will enable them to have great success and easily transition into 2nd grade. We will work on following classroom rules and directions as well as equipping your child to find their "voice" and use it appropriately in problem and conflict solving. We will work on phonics, phonemic awareness, reading, writing, fine and gross motor development, math, social and emotional development, problem solving, self-awareness, and much, much more. A combination of all of these things will help your child to be a successful first grader!
My 1st grade school picture!
It is going to be such a wonderful year. I am so excited about all of the learning, discovery and most importantly the fun that awaits your child in first grade.
I wanted to take the opportunity to share a little bit about myself. I earned my Bachelor’s of Science degree in Elementary Education from Missouri Western State University. I also hold certifications in both Special Education and Early Childhood. I began my teaching career at John W. Luff Elementary School in Independence. After seven years of teaching full-time I made the decision to stay home with my boys. During my time at home I taught Sunday School and worked part-time as both a classroom teacher at a private preschool and a substitute teacher for the Lee’s Summit School district.
Now that my boys are grown, I have returned to teaching full-time and am beyond thrilled to be a part of the Strasburg C3 school family again this year. I have a big heart for teaching and I look forward to working with you to help your child develop to their fullest in the coming school year.
This is such an exciting time for your child. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be their teacher and can’t wait to experience a fabulous year along side of them.
