BIO

Gábor Balázsi graduated with a Physics degree from the Babeș-Bolyai University in Romania, then completed a 2001 Physics PhD in noise-induced cellular dynamics at the University of Missouri at Saint Louis. From 2002, as a Systems Biology postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University, he studied gene-regulatory network response to environmental perturbations. From 2005, as a Synthetic Biology postdoctoral fellow at Boston University he developed synthetic gene circuits to control cellular diversity, to study its effects on drug resistance. As Assistant Professor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and as a 2009 NIH Director’s New Innovator Awardee, he built a growing library of synthetic gene circuits in yeast and human cells. Since 2014, as the Henry Laufer Professor of Physical and Quantitative Biology at Stony Brook University he leads an interdisciplinary research team that combines synthetic gene circuit design and cellular evolution with genome editing to unravel mechanisms of drug resistance and cancer progression.
