ENYGMMa (Empowering New York Gender Minority Mathematicians) is a monthly inter-university seminar series for graduate students, postdocs, and faculty primarily aimed at those who identify with gender minorities in mathematics but welcomes anyone from all backgrounds. This seminar series is held in rotation at the City University of New York, Columbia University, NYU, and Stony Brook University.

About Us

The main objectives of ENYGMMa are to foster community among women and non-binary mathematicians in the New York area, build an inviting, productive, and optimistic space where gender minority researchers can thrive, and increase the academic visibility of underrepresented members of the mathematical community. Each seminar will feature colloquium-style talks by typically underrrepresented gender minority mathematicians on current topics in research, as well as a lunch where participants can meet each other, talk to the invited speakers, and expand their network of friends and collaborators in the NY area.

Our Name

The name ENYGMMa was inspired by the significant role of women mathematicians in cracking the ciphers produced by the Enigma device, contributing to the eventual Allied victory in WWII. At Bletchley Park, about three-quarters of the codebreakers were women, staffed in all aspects of the operation, producing many of the most crucial insights of the war.

What We Believe

Underrepresentation and marginalization are pervasive, pernicious phenomena in mathematics today. The lack of community within institutions and departments is isolating. Lack of visibility impedes networking, makes it difficult for young mathematicians to find role models, and obstructs the sort of individual connections that are often what lead to the most productive and enjoyable mathematical work. ENYGMMa is about opening the conversation of mathematics to a greater variety of voices, ensuring that everyone has opportunities to speak and spaces in which to be heard.
