St. Thomas More Collegiate is proud to offer our Elementary Band Program for the 2026-2027 school year!
STMC Elementary Band
Welcome to the STMC Elementary Band! We are going to share an exciting year of music and learning. Here, you will find all the information you need to get started.
Who can participate?
Students in grades 5-7 with little or no previous training on a band instrument are invited to participate.
What will we do?
Students will be introduced to basic music skills, knowledge, and theory, and learn to play one of the following instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, and Percussion
(*Note: percussion spots are limited and prior piano playing experience is required).
The STMC Elementary Band is an inclusive, fun, exploratory, and supportive team environment!
When and Where will we meet?
Rehearsals will take place at St. Thomas More Collegiate (7450 12th Ave., Burnaby) on Thursdays from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM from September 17 to the end of April (date TBC). Students will participate in various concerts and workshops throughout the year.
Fees
The cost for the STMC Elementary Band is $350 for the year. Fees are non-refundable.
$100 non-refundable deposit due June 22
$250 due by Friday, September 11.
Fees must be paid on Karelo using this link
https://www.karelo.com/register.php?BID=485&BT=10&Ev=23623
Sign up for a Karelo account (or log into your account), then under "Events," select "Elementary Band Deposit." The $250 balance MUST be paid by September 11, otherwise your spot will be offered to a student on the waiting list.
*If multiple students from one family are involved in the group, we can offer a discount. The fee for the first student is $350 with each subsequent student fee being $275. These families should send a CHEQUE payable to STMC rather than paying on Karelo.
Instrument Rental and Supplies
All band members will be required to supply their own instrument. The STMC music department will help facilitate rental services in September with Tapestry Music. Students are also required to purchase the Sound Innovations Book 1 method book for their corresponding instrument. Please DO NOT rent or purchase an instrument or a book until the instrument selection process has been completed and Ms. MacLellan has informed you about what instrument you'll be playing. Please do not purchase an instrument from Amazon or any retailer that is not a music store. Almost always, these instruments are poorly made and become unplayable in a very short time.
How Do I Register?
By June 22, please complete this registration form. Before listing your student's favourite instruments on the form, please have them watch this video where musicians from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra demonstrate instruments and explain what is special about each one.)
Ms. MacLellan will then be in contact via email before the start of school with further details.
