POWERLINES

ADRIANA MCDONALD, CLASS OF 2024

INTERVIEW WITH THE ARTIST

CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE WORK YOU CREATED?

ADRIANA: I take the expressway home everyday, and I always enjoy looking at the power lines that criss-cross over it, but one particular day the sky was glowing blue and the power lines were twinkling above me. I was mesmerized and immediately began brainstorming how to capture this moment in art.

WHAT DID THE CREATIVE PROCESS ENTAIL? DOES THIS PIECE AFFECT YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?

ADRIANA: I began by researching pictures of power line structures, and determining the size I wanted the final composition to be. I then proceeded to print a picture of the powerline structure I liked the most, layered it with a metallic silver paper and cut out the structure using an exacto knife. I then put a solid layer of silver leaf on a canvas, and painted over it with various blue acrylic paints. After I finished painting, I attached the power line structure using rubber cement and modge podge. I then cut small strips of the metallic paper and attached them. Ultimately, this piece reminded me to pay attention to the smaller details in a composition because they tie the piece together.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THIS WORK COMPARED TO YOUR OTHER PIECES?

ADRIANA: This piece is the first piece that I’ve created recently that I genuinely feel reflects myself as a person and my experiences. It’s easy to get lost down pinterest rabbit holes and create art inspired by others, which I enjoy, but creating a piece that comes from your own thoughts is truly a magical experience in my opinion.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU LOVE ABOUT CREATING ART?

ADRIANA: I love the creative process and all that it entails, from the early planning stages to beginning work on it, to critiques with peers. I rely heavily on the creative process to really round out rough ideas into finished works of art that I can enjoy.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO CREATE? HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE ART INTO YOUR LIFE?

ADRIANA: My biggest motivation is daily experiences, I enjoy finding small moments in nature and throughout my day that can ultimately lead to art. I try to incorporate art into my life through observing others’ artworks and appreciating the art that surrounds us daily.
