On Monday, in our ongoing exploration of biblical teachings, Mrs Lee delved into the "Seven Big Ideas" that form the foundation of the 'Big Story' of the Bible. These overarching concepts encapsulate the key principles and themes that resonate throughout the scriptures, providing valuable insights into our faith and guiding principles for living.
On Wednesday, our school community came together for an extended Collective Worship to observe Ash Wednesday. Guided by Gary, we engaged in prayer, song, and a thoughtful explanation of the significance of this special day in the Christian calendar.
During our worship, Gary provided insights into the rituals associated with Ash Wednesday. Towards the conclusion of the service, an invitation was extended to those who wished to partake in the symbolic imposition of ashes placed on foreheads.Â
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lent season, a period of reflection, repentance, and preparation leading up to Easter. It is a time for self-examination, spiritual growth, and drawing closer to God.
In school we will be participating, as usual, in simple, daily 'Live Lent' activities. This year our focus will be on justice and injustice.Â

Year 3 Explores Stonehenge!
Beginning with in-depth research, Year Three delved into the mysteries surrounding Stonehenge, unraveling its historical significance and cultural context. Armed with newfound knowledge, they transitioned into a creative phase where they crafted their own Stonehenge replicas from clay. This tactile activity not only honed their fine motor skills but also provided a tangible connection to the ancient monument.
To bring a touch of magic to their exploration, the students engaged in capturing the essence of Stonehenge through sunset pictures, allowing our budding artists to experiment with colours.
The week, culminated with a comparison debate of Ancient Egypt and Stone Age Britain. The Year Three's collectively decided that the Egyptians were the superior builders!
Miss Devlin Gears Up for the London Marathon with Another Half Marathon Achievement
We are thrilled to share the exciting news that Miss Devlin is diligently preparing for the upcoming London Marathon. Recently, she accomplished another remarkable milestone by completing her second half marathon as part of her rigorous training. What makes this journey even more inspiring is Miss Devlin's dedication to supporting the charity Cardiomyopathy, a cause close to her heart.
Miss Devlin's courageous advocacy is something we are delighted to witness firsthand, and we believe it will resonate positively with our children. In solidarity with her efforts, we are making a slight adjustment to our charity focus for the remainder of this term. Until the marathon, our collective support will be directed towards aiding Miss Devlin in her preparations. After the race, we will shift our attention to the fabulous charity Playskill, which the children enthusiastically voted for, for the remainder of the year.
To actively involve our students in supporting Miss Devlin, she will be presenting some exciting charity opportunities to them on Thursday during Collective Worship. These initiatives include a non-school uniform day, a cake sale, and a sponsored class marathon around the Aquadrome. You will receive a letter next week with further details.
Thank you for joining us in encouraging Miss Devlin on her marathon journey and supporting these meaningful charitable endeavours.Â
Year One: Hertfordshire Zoo
Exciting adventures unfolded last week as our Year One children embarked on a visit to Hertfordshire Zoo. The visit marked the culmination of their Science exploration, focusing on comparing the differences and similarities between animals. Year One delved into the captivating world of animal classification, showcasing their knowledge in naming animals as carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores.
The trip not only provided a hands-on experience but also enriched their understanding of the animal kingdom. Engaging activities and close encounters with various species allowed the students to witness firsthand the wonders of the natural world.
🌟 Club of the Week: Karate! 🌟
This week we are spotlighting our new Karate Club. Launched just this term, the club has quickly become a dynamic hub of activity for our children. Our enthusiastic participants are immersed in the foundational aspects of karate, mastering the basic movements and stances that lay the groundwork for their martial arts journey. Under the guidance of Steve, the children are not only building physical strength and coordination but also cultivating discipline and focus through the key areas - character, sincerity, effort, etiquette and self control.Â

Attendance at school is key to a child's future success and happiness. Over the coming weeks, we will be taking a letter from the alphabet, in turn, in order to highlight the importance of being at school and advice for parents and carers.
B is for Being Present - Each day at school offers valuable learning experiences. By being present, your child can benefit from a structured curriculum, diverse subjects, and various extracurricular activities that contribute to their overall development. By being present in class helps them stay on track with lessons, and educational milestones. By being present ensures that your child is ready and prepared to absorb new knowledge.

Reading in School
Please keep Wednesday 13th March - 09:00 - 10:00 free to find out why reading fluency is an important aspect for all children to master.
Reading is at the core of our curriculum, and to further support the reading experience, we are actively working on having more adults in school to listen to our children read. To facilitate this, we require children to have their reading book and reading record in their bags daily. While book changes will continue as before, this ensures flexibility for adults to hear children read in school.Â
If you have any spare time to listen to our children reading, we would love to hear from you. Please email Mrs Palmer to let us know your availability.
Community News
We would love to hear and share news regarding the activities and accomplishments of our children outside of the school environment, as well as updates on noteworthy contributions or events within our parent body and the broader local community.
Please submit all relevant information to Mrs Palmer at admin@stmarys698.herts.sch.uk. Your contributions will not only serve to highlight the diverse talents within our community but will also contribute to the collective narrative that shapes the identity of St Mary's.
