Learning Outcomes: Demonstrate an understanding of engaged pedagogy, critical theory and social systems as related to justice and leadership studies and be able to apply theoretical explanations to empirical examples.
During my two years as a JCL major my eyes where opened to the world outside of my personal bubble. A major component of this eye opening experience were the readings of Paulo Friere, bell hooks, and Shawn Ginwright. A major part of my JCL education was the practice of using these readings to develop my own thoughtful inquiry of a present social issue. Through papers and presentations, I demonstrated my understanding of the connections I found between readings and present social systems. One of these papers was in JCL 10, where I demonstrated my understanding of the social systems that effect present education systems. In this paper and graphic I linked the future of apartheid schooling with the institutional based decisions that are imposed by society ultimately leading to the "school to prison pipeline". In my conclusion I emphasized the need of dialogue between teachers and student which is highlighted in the readings of Freire and bell hooks. While in JCL 10, I was able to practice this dialogue with a student (seen above) during my time with an organization called "Reading Partners". In the span of three months I was able to see how humanizing dialogue with students can positively impact educational experience despite what institutional based decisions are being made.
