Learning Outcomes: Assess a complex social or community issue and develop viable strategies that contribute to a more just social order.
January term of 2017 was the turning point of my education. I believe that this is where I started my "becoming" as a teacher by applying my Saint Mary's learning and putting it into practice. For one month, I attended a fourth grade classroom at Cambridge Elementary School in Concord. As my days turned into weeks in the classroom and my connections with the students grew, I realized the need for bell hook's method of Holistic Education; a type of education that emphasizes the wellbeing of the student beyond the classroom. These students ability to thrive in the classroom correlated to what goes on in their lives outside of school as well as out on the playground at recess. With this knowledge, my understanding of a teacher's role deepened. I came to understand the difference between discipline and simply ignoring a student when they are being disrespectful and that listening is the key to understanding. This experience enabled me to develop critical awareness of the inequalities present in the education system depending on the geographical location of the school. My time at Cambridge Elementary made my decision to become a teacher for "title one" schools, such as Cambridge, stronger and my longing to foster confidence and personal advocacy within my students even more prominent in my focus.
