Third Grade Vocabulary, Chapter 1

Blessed Trinity: the Three Persons in One God: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit

Incarnation: the truth that God the Son became man

Prophet: someone called by God to speak to the people

Repent: to turn away from sin and to ask God for help to live a good life

Public Ministry: Jesus' work among the people

Disciples: those who follow Jesus

Apostle: one who is sent

Fifth Grade Vocabulary: Chapter 1

Third Grade Vocabulary: Chapter 2

Bible: the book in which God's word is written

Kingdom of God: the power of God's love active in the world

Faith: a gift from God that helps us to believe and trust in him

crucified: nailed to a cross

Resurrection: Jesus' being raised from the dead

Fifth Grade Vocabulary, Chapter 2

evangelization: proclaiming the Good News of Christ by what we say and do

liturgy: the official public prayer of the Church

Pascal Mystery: Christ's suffering, death, resurrection from the dead, and Ascension into heaven

Last Judgment: Jesus Christ coming at the end of time to judge all people

Corporal Works of Mercy: acts of love that help us care for the physical and material needs of others

Spiritual Works of Mercy: acts of love that help us care for the needs of people's hearts, minds, and souls

Scripture to be memorized: Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me. Matthew 25:40.

Third Grade Vocabulary, Chapter 3

Second coming: Jesus' coming at the end of time

Heaven: life with God forever

Last Judgment: Jesus Christ coming at the end of time to judge all people

Third Grade Vocabulary, Chapter 4

mission: special job

Ascension: Jesus returning to the Father in heaven

Pentecost: the day the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles

Church: community of people who are baptized and follow Jesus Christ

Christians: baptized people, followers of Jesus Christ

Third Grade Circle of Grace Vocabulary

Circle of Grace: the love and goodness of God which always surrounds me and all others

Boundary: the borders or limits we need to keep ourselves safe within our Circle of Grace

Treasured: we are so unique and precious that we could not be replaced in God's eyes

VIolate: to break a law, promise, or boundary

Fifth Grade Vocabulary, Chapter 3

sacrament: an effective sign given to us by Jesus through which we share in God's life

sanctifying grace: the gift of sharing in God's life that we receive in the sacraments

Christian initiation: the process of becoming a member of the Church through the Sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist

common vocation: the call to holiness and evangelization that all Christians share

holiness: sharing in God's goodness and responding to his love by the way we live; our holiness comes through grace

Scripture to be memorized: I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Luke 5:32

Fifth Grade Vocabulary, Chapter 4

Baptism: the sacrament in which we are freed from sin, become children of God, and are welcomed into the Church

Incarnation: the truth that the Son of God became man

salvation: the forgiveness of sins and the restoring of friendship with God

prophet: someone who speaks on behalf of God, defends the truth, and works for justice

eternal life: living in happiness with God forever

saints: followers of Christ who lived lives of holiness on earth and now share in eternal life with God in heaven

Acts of the Apostles

Book in the Bible that tells the story of the work of the Apostles in the early Church

Gospel

Good News that we are saved by Jesus Christ, the Son of God

Martyrs

People who die for their faith

Third Grade Vocabulary Chapter 6

Advent: We prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus at Christmas.

Christmas: We rejoice that the Son of God became one of us to save us.

Lent: We prepare to celebrate the Resurrection at Easter.

The Three Days: We celebrate the passing of Jesus from death to new life.

Easter: We celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus.

Ordinary Time: We celebrate the whole life of Jesus Christ and his teachings.

Fifth Grade Vocabulary, Chapter 5

catechumenate: a period of formation for Christian initiation that includes prayer and liturgy, religious instruction, and service to others

Sacred Chrism: perfumed oil blessed by the bishop

Bishops: the successors of the Apostles who lead the Church

dioceses: local areas of the Church led by bishops

pope: the Bishop of Rome who leads the whole Catholic Church

marks of the church: four characteristics that describe the Church; the Church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic

Third Grade Vocabulary Chapter 9

Apostles Creed: Christian statement of beliefs based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and the faith of the Apostles

justice: treating everyone fairly and with respect

Third Grade, Vocabulary Chapter 10

prayer: listening and talking to God

synagogue: the gathering place where Jewish people pray and learn about God

liturgy: the official public prayer of the Church

pilgrimages: prayer journeys to holy places

Third Grade Vocabulary, Chapter 11

Parish: community of believers who worship and work together.

Pastor: the priest who leads the parish in worship, prayer, and teaching.

Deacon: a man who is not a priest but has received the Sacrament of Holy Orders and serves the Church by preaching, baptizing, and assisting the bishop and priests.

Fifth Grade Vocabulary Chapter 9

Gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord.

Scripture to be memorized: If you love me, keep my commandments. I will ask the Father to give you another Helper, to be with you always. He is the Spirit of truth. John 14:15

vocation: God's call to serve him in a certain way

lay people: baptized members of the Church who share in the mission to bring the Good News of Christ to the world
