By Mary Hogan Jones, MAT/CPDLT

This week’s tool is coming from a parent who “talks too much,” and I’ve found that this tool actually brings a bit of fun into situations. This is one of my “go to” tools both in and out of the classroom for all ages of children because it’s something we agree on together. The good news is that it helps both of us stay connected respectfully. Prior to this, I would feel as if my child wasn’t listening (a real problem for me, how about you?) or this kid was driving me crazy with their behavior and nothing seemed to work. Then when it hit me what I was doing (ignoring, then lecturing) wasn’t working because we weren’t connecting first. Figuring out a silent signal for the next time brought us together, and before long we were both feeling better.

Keeping a sense of calm is really helpful, so if you’re not quite there yet when it comes to using “silent signals,” just sit with your child for a few minutes quietly. A hug may help, and then you can together figure out your new way of respectfully signaling each other.

Have a blessed week and Thanksgiving,

Mary Hogan Jones

Volunteer Position OPEN: Gym Manager

We need a gym manager to host a CSAA Basketball League (one way we fund our PE and Athletics programs). The Athletics Committee will help you recruit the folks needed to work games for the eight weeks of regular basketball season. This is a fun way to model giving of your time to help others. Kids love helping out at the gym! And it's a great way for you to connect with others in the St. Leonard community. Contact T.J. at with questions.
