Weekly Parish Update

May 13th, 2021

9 Days Until the Wind and Flames

Nine days in a row of a repeated prayer. A Novena. The Novena to St. Joseph for example, or the Divine Mercy Novena. It is an ancient Catholic way of prayer.

Nine days. That is the number between the 40th day of Easter, the traditional day of the Ascension of the Lord, and Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit fell upon the disciples in tongues of flame and language. Many say that those days of prayer, when Jesus' followers prayed for what was to come, was the origin of Novena. May 13th is the 40th day of Easter. And even though we will celebrate the Ascension on Sunday, we have nine days to pray before Pentecost. And I would offer as a good prayer for these days the Veni Sancte Spiritus. Below is a wonderful reflection on this prayer from the Campus Ministry resources at Creighton University. Let's pray and reflect together, and see what gifts we find in our communities this Pentecost.

Outdoor Pentecost Mass

Sunday, May 23 at 11:00 am on the St. Leonard soccer field

Our parishes are excited to announce that we will be celebrating a joint Mass for Pentecost OUTDOORS next Sunday, May 23 at 11:00 am. Bring a blanket or lawn chair for Mass, and join us on the soccer field of St. Leonard Parish (Mass will be moved to the gym in case of inclement weather). An Easter Egg Hunt for kids of all ages will follow!

Please note the change in Mass schedule that weekend:

  • St. Leonard will still offer Mass (in the church) at 5:00 pm on Saturday, May 22.

  • Our regular Sunday morning Masses (8:30 am, 10:00 am, and 11:30 am) will be cancelled on May 23 to accommodate the 11:00 am Outdoor Mass.

  • The 11:00 am Outdoor Mass will be recorded and uploaded onto both parishes' Facebook pages for those unable to attend in person.

We hope you will join us for this exciting opportunity!

Worldwide Rosary to end the pandemic

Church of St. Leonard Parish on Monday, May 17 at 12:00 pm

Join us as we join the worldwide Church in praying the Rosary for an end to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pope Francis has urged all Catholics to pray the Rosary daily throughout May as part of a "marathon of prayer" to end the pandemic. The Holy See has selected the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, to lead the worldwide recitation of the Rosary this Monday, May 17 at noon EST, praying specifically for world leaders and for all heads of international organizations as it leads the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary.

We invite you to join us in St. Leonard's church on Monday, May 17 at noon to pray the Rosary together: we will project the live-stream from the National Shrine on a screen and pray along with the worldwide church. Mary, Mother of Mercy, pray for us and for our world!

Renovations Update!

Please Note Change In Liturgy Location During Renovations!

Restoration of St. Frances of Rome Church continues to move forward. This week's pictures show that we are finished with patching, and most of the painting. As you can see, most of the scaffolding is gone, and we are down to the finer details. The work is actually ahead of schedule, which has allowed us to add a few tasks like refinishing the front doors, and some woodwork in a few spots. As it stands, we should be back in church very close to the first week in June. We will continue to keep you updated.

Hey, parents and friends! Since things are complicated and the summer is busy, we are going to shoot for a 1-day VBS this year (likely June 16th or 17th) If you would want to participate (either to attend or volunteer), please contact Andrew! Men's Work/Play Gathering at St. Leonard

May 18th from 7:30 - 9:00 pm

Hey, fellas! This week about 10 of us got together and did some work around the church. Check out these new landscaping timbers! Afterwards, we shared a couple bourbons and home-brewed beers. It went really well, so we are looking to make this a regular thing.

We're getting together again next Tuesday the 18th to do some of the same. Hope to see you there! Please contact Andrew Hennessy with any questions.

Easter Egg Hunt

Sunday, May 23 after the outdoor Mass

Don't forget! Our traditional Easter Egg Hunt for kids of all ages will take place right after the 11:00 am outdoor Mass on Sunday, May 23rd. This will be a great way to conclude our Easter season celebrations together. Families from both St. Leonard and St. Frances of Rome are invited to participate!

Thank you, Leonard Ladies!

We had a great time weeding the gardens and scrubbing pews together on May 12th, and we look forward to continuing this service again on May 26th. Thanks to all who gave of their time and talents to help care for our campus!

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of him.” Ephesians 1:17

We love and serve a God we cannot see, yet we see Him in everyone and everything around us. Being good stewards of all that is around us is how we show our love of God.
