Welcome to Mr. Fremed’s sixth grade math class! I am looking forward to working with each of you throughout the school year. While we are starting out the school year with “distance learning,” we are still in school, still learning. St. Jude is providing us the online environment and necessary support for a productive and successful school year, and as Jaguars I’m confident we will rise to the occasion and continue our pursuit of academic growth.
Sixth grade math is an exciting year of transition. In previous math classes, the focus has been on individual fundamental concepts. While there will certainly be review to solidify our knowledge of those topics, this year we begin the full application of the fundamentals. Additionally, a greater emphasis will be placed on interpreting word problems to create equations. Notably, we will be introduced to algebraic equations and the procedures to solve them. Major topics for the year will also include extensive work with ratios, proportions, and percent, inequalities, and integers and rational numbers (including negative numbers!). We will also work with the coordinate plane, graphing functions and geometric figures, and investigate the area of those figures. We will conclude our year with a discussion of statistics and how to present and interpret data.
Along with your textbook, supplies include pencils, erasers, red ballpoint pens (for correcting), standard lined paper, and some graph paper.
Staying organized is a great way to help ensure success in math class. I recommend a 3-ring binder to keep your papers in order, with separate sections for notes, work in progress, completed (turned in) assignments, and (“blank”) paper ready for use. Another option would be labeled paper trays.
Please make sure to not only attend our online class sessions, but to participate in the discussions as well. Asking questions is one of the most important ways for individuals to learn. If necessary, don’t hesitate to reach out and contact me for additional assistance.
It’s time; let’s get this school year started! I think we are all going to learn a lot, and have a fun time along the way!
