Welcome to Mr. Fremed’s eighth grade math class, Algebra! I am looking forward to working with each of you throughout the school year. While we are starting out the school year with “distance learning,” we are still in school, still learning. St. Jude is providing us the online environment and necessary support for a productive and successful school year, and as Jaguars I’m confident we will rise to the occasion and continue our pursuit of academic growth.
I am confident that a year of Algebra will be unlike any other math class you have had thus far. It will be a challenging, yet extremely fulfilling year. The list of topics is extensive, and our investigations will be in-depth. After solidifying our skills solving multi-step algebra equations, with an emphasis on word problems, we will cover topics such as linear functions and equations (more word problems), systems of equations (yeah, more word problems), exponents, scientific notation, and radicals (square root). Our last major topic of the year will focus on working with polynomials, learning to add, subtract, multiply, and divide them. Our emphasis will be on quadratic equations, learning how to solve them five different ways, with a highlight of the quadratic formula. Oh, yeah and did I mention more word problems.
Along with your textbook, supplies include pencils, erasers, red ballpoint pens (for correcting), standard lined paper, and some graph paper.
Staying organized is a great way to help ensure success in math class. I recommend a 3-ring binder to keep your papers in order, with separate sections for notes, work in progress, completed (turned in) assignments, and (“blank”) paper ready for use. Another option would be labeled paper trays.
Please make sure to not only attend our online class sessions, but to participate in the discussions as well. Asking questions is one of the most important ways for individuals to learn. If necessary, don’t hesitate to reach out and contact me for additional assistance.
It’s time; let’s get this school year started! I think we are all going to learn a lot, and have a fun time along the way!
