Chemistry is the study of matter at the level of atoms, molecules, ions and compounds. These substances are the building blocks of life and all of the materials that surround us. Chemists play a vital role in the production of everyday commodities. Chemistry research and development is essential for the introduction of new products. The study of chemistry is of benefit not only to those intending to pursue a career in science, but also to those intending to work in areas such as the food, health, textile or manufacturing industries.
In National 4 & 5 Chemistry students study 3 units.
In Unit 1 Chemical Changes and Structures students learn about Chemical Reactions, Atomic Structure, Bonding and Acids & Bases.
In Unit 2 Natures Chemistry students learn about the chemistry of carbon including Hydrocarbons, Everyday Consumer Products and Fuels.
In Unit 3 Chemistry in Society students learn about Polymers, Metals, Radioactivity and the Environment.
All topics are studied through a variety of learning and teaching approaches.
National 4 Chemistry leads onto National 5 Chemistry
National 5 Chemistry leads onto Higher Chemistry
